Could be Interesting- Queensryche with Todd La Torre

Geoff Responds to the rumors (Kinda classy, I thought....and this makes me number 44! Woot!):

During the question-and-answer portion of the event, Tate was asked about the future of QUEENSRŸCHE in light of the recent rumors that he assaulted guitarist Michael Wilton and pulled a knife on drummer Scott Rockenfield at an April 14 gig in Brazil. Tate also addressed the announcement earlier in the week that four members of QUEENSRŸCHE — Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Parker Lundgren — have joined forces with Todd La Torre of CRIMSON GLORY to form a new project called RISING WEST, which will make its live debut on Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9 at the Hard Rock Café in Seattle, Washington.

"Well, they made me give up my knife when I came in here today," Tate joked. "Mandatory metal detector…" He then added on a more serious note, "Nah, rumors are rumors. We're planning on getting together next year to perhaps record, definitely tour. We just all decided this year that we're gonna take the year to do side projects, so that's what we're doing." He continued, "I'm thinking, I'm not gonna really dispel too many of the rumors because it's hardly ever that QUEENSRYCHE gets any publicity, so this is great. All 43 people on the Internet are talking about it."

Just have to chime in here... I like the ASTRONOMICA CD a great deal... Wade Black's vocals on songs like "New World Machine" and "Touch the Sun" are fabulous... and he nailed them live to boot... just my two cents....yeah the programed drums are poor but I still like the songs.....

Todd does an excellent job on these Queensryche recordings. I really hope that he gets an opportunity to release original music with Rising West and Crimson Glory so he can show that he's more than just a chameleon. Finally, I second Azrael LenGraden with the support for Astronomica. Wade sounds awesome on that album, and there's a heaviness to that album that wasn't there on previous releases. Jeff Lords's bass tone on that disc is pretty mean, too. I'd certainly take the last two Crimson Glory albums over the last six Queensryche albums any day!

Stay metal. Never rust.

One time a friend of mine and I went to a mall eons ago and he picked up the new Queensryche (at the time) and I can't recall which one it was. He chucked it out the window 1/2 way home. He was one of the biggest Ryche fans I knew.

Funny timing for this thread. I saw Geoff Tate do a solo "unplugged" show on Sunday at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix.*

I had made a comment on my FB page that I was going anyway, despite the fact that QR had been breaking my heart with crappy CDs for over a decade. Later spoke to my mom, who saw the post and suggested that I "had finally outgrown them." I tried in vain to explain that it wasn't me "outgrowing", but rather QR "sucking".

*Setlist was hugely disappointing -- mostly from Tate's first solo CD -- but he actually sounded great. (Of course, he didn't attempt any classics like "Queen of the Reich", "Take Hold of the Flame", etc.)

Queensryche is not interesting. They have not been interesting since the release of Promise Land. The idea that they would somehow become interesting, if only they were to rid themselves of the most talented member of the band and in essence and essentially turn themselves into a tribute band, is something of a bizarre notion.

From Michael Wilton's Facebook page:

"We are being denied access to our own facebook page and website (meaning Queensryche) so please spread the word for about Rising West. Rising West will be on KISW 99.9 this Thursday around 4:30
Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at our shows!"

It's the eternal optimism of longtime fans (myself included) that Wilton/Jackson/Rockenfield still have some of the magic chemistry they had for so many years, and can turn out some new material worthy of the name Queensryche. It's easy for us to make Tate the scapegoat for the last almost 20 years. He may have the talent, but he lost the songwriting a long time ago.

I really don't know what to expect. Up until a few years ago, the idea of a band coming back strong after so many years of stagnation seemed far fetched, however, quite a few bands have started to do exactly that, so my "Cindy Loo Who" optimism remains intact for the new 'Ryche.

I could understand clinging to that optimism if Tate remained and DeGarmo returned. However, did Wilton/Jackson/Rockenfield ever have any magic of their own? Do we know that those three musicians, would have produced anything of value without Tate and DeGarmo in the mix?

Geoff Tate the most talented in the band? Not in the past 15 years he hasn't been. As matter of fact I've seen him as the cancer. Bring on Rising West!

Nope! But I'm currently willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I can't wait until the nail is put in the coffin and the bullshit goes away.

Queensryche was good for a long time. Now they're pathetic, and soon enough this will be a Timo Tolkki-style drama (if it's not already).

How about the potential of having a new band with a singer who can still hit all of his big notes that made him famous back in the day?

I'm not sure how that's different than a tribute band. His voice is QR. Without him, it's three run of the mill 50 year old musicians, who were once the three least important parts of a band that was great 20 years ago. I'm really not sure why anyone would think that anything of interest would all of a sudden come forth. If those three guys had anything to say musically, would they really have had to bring in someone else to write O:McII?

As always, to each their own. But I can't say I'm interested in anything these guys put out, regardless of who they're paired with.

I would be curious about the actual songwriting credit percentage of all QR songs to the individual band members so we can have some numbers to clarify the impact of said members. Who would like to tabulate this? Thanks in advance...

Hey, I never meant to say anything good would come out of it, only pointed out the other guys may look forward to that (and perhaps a guy who doesnt pull a knife on them, lol).

I also have zero interest in anything Tate/Ryche relAted things post Promised Land.

From what I read, the early albums through Promised Land switched between it being a Tate and DeGarmo album (if what I read is true) and I don't really know if any of the other members contributed anything. If that is true, then I would assume Tate's been doing pretty much all the writing since DeGarmo left.

Honestly, I just don't see the POINT in this. Might be a revenge plot or a musical conspiracy on a scale we haven't seen since the Rolling Stones "lost" Bill Wyman. I'm just not sure. Of course, I was a QR fanboy from 83 through 90, and, like most of the entire free thinking world, disliked (putting it mildly) everything post-PL. I understand the turmoil behind the scenes, and the desire to "keep performing live" but I would think forming A NEW BAND instead of a 4/5 of the original band Tribute Band (which is basically what Rising West IS) would be a better path to take.

But that's just me.
