Could they be the band to do it?

For the last 4 or 5 years I've been waiting for the band to come along that would bring rock n roll back to the masses. The band to push all of the crap like Britney, the boy bands and hip poop to the side and make a big enough noise for the regular music buying puplic to take notice. At one time I thought that one of the bands from the Swedish rock scene could pull it off (someone like the Backyard Babies, Hellacopters or Hardcore Superstar) but it was not to be.

Don't look now but I think we have another contender in the form of The Darkness. It's time for a change in music and I think these guys may just be the band to open the flood gates. I think they are fantastic and I hope they can pull it off.

By this summer I bet there will be a couple "like sounding" bands floating around. It would be cool if the '00 ended up being remember for the return of rock and not for this diva pop crap!

Hell, even Sixx likes them so you know they rock.

Got a great story for you here Greeno, and this is about as true as it gets, I heard it from a marketing man associated with various Record Companys only the other day while in the studio recording. Did you hear about the UK Xmas Number 1? well if u didnt by now then for about 4 weeks the Darkness were pipped to become just that, Xmas No1 with 'Xmas time(dont let the bells end)' but at the last minute Gary Jouls knocked em off the top spot with a tedious reworking of tears for fears 'Mad World'

Get this for a story, and if youve heard anything to the contrary, forget it! this is the real deal!
The darkness basically WERE NOT ALLOWED Xmas No1 by the bloody record companies, one, they wanted to Gary Jouls to get it so that they could release another tears for fears greatest hits and cash in, two, they would rather ANYONE have it than a rock band (breeds individuality dont you know! frightening!) therefore the figures were messed with and made to look like a last minute buying public went demented all at the same time and bought the crock of shit that turned out to be number one (by default)
This is the kind of shit that brits have to contend with, were suppressed all the time, always told what we can and cannot listen to so that we can conform in their plastic society and be told what to do and do it (ahhh, nice puppets!)
Remember years back when they did the same thing with Maiden (bring your daughter..) and Cliff Richard (spit!), apparently it turned out that old Stiff Pilchard didnt take too kindly to this ungodly song beating him to the hallowed xmas no1 spot so again the record companys screwed with it to please him.
Its damn hard being a rock fan in britain, youre always fighting an uphill battle, everythings against you, I liked the Darkness's album (i bought it withought listening to it first and thats rare), the only reservation I have is, theyve got to go away and beat that now! THATS gonna take some doing, but if they pull it off it should be one hell of an album!

=/ Not really. Only reason people like them is that song "i believe in a thing called love" or whatever the hell it's called. Besides i could list a number of metal bands who made #1 before and took over MTV and got the world to love them.

Metallica
Ozzy Osbourne
AC/DC
Kiss
Aerosmith
Disturbed
Linkin Park
KoRn
Puddle of Mudd
Marilyn Manson

just to name a few.

This is true, but did it happen in England? Stateside its a bit more tolerant towards rock and metal than here, were all herded around like lambs to the slaughter.

Speak for yourself. I frankly think that track that you refer to, is the filler track on the record. I like them, because I heard the WHOLE record not just the track given to radio & MTV. I get this feeling with this band like when I first heard Buckcherry. It was retro but fresh at the same time. For a guy that doesn't want to like the band you sure know the name of their songs...

It's not just that one song... the whole album is good, not one bad song on it in my opinion.

As for the bands you listed, I don't see them opening the flood gates of a new Rock N Roll revolution.... Rock N Roll being the key words here. I was talking about a NEW band to come along and shake things up. The first 5 bands on your list are too old to start something new. They are going to continue putting out albums and the fans will continue buying them, but they've already made their marks on music and I don't see them spearheading a new movement. As for the last 5 bands on your list, what do they have to do with Rock N Roll? To be honest, I'd rather listen to Britney then those bands..... sorry.

Sadly, this band is unlikely to change the current trend of metal... they have a single song that everyone knows them by, and they will fade away once the single-song craze dies off... thye may continue to make music, but it is unlikely they will make an impact

for the past 3 years I have been saying that the return would be between 2005 and 2006. I just had a big feeling of that. Hopefully it holds to be true

It will happen. What goes around comes around again and again. Some radio-rock bands are making decent stuff, it's just spotty. The latest Fuel CD rips, but it's just not "metal" and it is certainly the exception rathar than the rule. Don't take that the wrong way, Fuel is not going to revolutionize the next metal scene. They are notTHAT much different than taind or those other alterna-metallish bands. I mentioned Fuel because they put together a whole CD full of very good songs as opposed to one with three hits and filler.
There will be a new wave of metal before we know it, but we just have to wait til it comes. Fans don't control the industry, the media does. Watever MTV promotes and the stations play are what sparks the labels to sign the bands playing that stuff.

Errrm...did you guys miss out on Growing On Me and Get Your Hands Off My Woman? :err:

I'm inclined to think The Darkness are gonna do good things for us. Last summer they were the shit hot thing going around, I remember we used to have gatherings of mates ranging from 13 - 17 years old, most of us into different things but everyone clicked on The Darkness. It's good that they've put decent rock music back into the psyche of people, and the potential for the floodgates to open are good, seeing as there are plenty of shit-hot new Metal bands in the UK who could benefit from this...as well as the new Maiden album helping back in September.

I think the true test of a change in attitudes will be when Judas Priest release their new album...if the mainstream mags are giving it good reviews then the world is set to end! :D

I also expect The Darkness will run into trouble with the next album because if it sounds remotely similar to the first then you'll get one helluva backlash. Suppose that's the other test, if The Darkness stick around...

I was flipping through the channels and saw the "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" video. I know some of you guys like them, but I wasn't impressed by The Darkness at all. Granted, this is the only song I have heard, but wouldn't a better one have been used as the single?

Here's the thing about this band, you have to hear them more than a couple times. The first time you hear them your reaction is "what the hell is that!" ..... the next listen is "hummm, they do have a little hook"... and by the 3 or 4 listen the hooks are embedded in your brain!! That's how it happened to me and a couple friends, plus I saw it happen to Sixx in his posts. Ted sent him a copy and at first he was saying that it was "ok", but a day or 2 later he was all into them.

The only other band that is like this is the Ramones. The first time you hear them you wounder what all the hype is about, by the 5th time you hear them you agree that yes indeed, they are rock n roll gods! Not that the Darkness is even close to the level of the Ramones, but they do share this one thing.

I just wanted to add that in my original post you'll notice that I'm talking about Rock N Roll, not metal. These guys are a hard rock band, not a metal band. However, their success would help the metal scene in a round about way.... I think.

I'm with you on that, Slayer85. I'd much rather see a mainstream rock scene than all of this pop diva crap!

Every year in January there is a big outdoor summer music festival called Big Day Out that goes around to each major city in Australia and usually gets about 80,000 people at each one, and they just get all the biggest rock/alternative bands from around the world to play it.

Anyway, this year's was headlined by Metallica, and also featured The Darkness. That itself is a good sign that hard rock/metal might be taking over again! And everybody who went was totally blown away by The Darkness and loved them, whether they were the metal fans there for Metallica or even the modern rock/alternative fans there for the shit bands. Everyone loved The Darkness. So maybe they do have what it takes to bring it back to the masses!

Of recent years, it seems to me like the 3 bands who have popped up who've had a chance to bring it back rock & roll have been Buckcherry, Murderdolls & now The Darkness. Buckcherry ended up not doing much but hopefully the other 2 can do something!

Oops. Yeah, haven't heard either of those.
I severely recommend Get Your Hands Of My Woman personally. My favourite, probably the heaviest of their songs, top notch vocal job
