Covers (meaning remakes of songs, not album art) kick ass, as we all know, and thusly I decided to make a topic dedicated to them. Anyone have favorite covers? What about bands/songs that Skyfire should cover?

My personal favorite cover is the Sentenced version of "The Trooper" (Maiden). I'm also a big fan of "Hallowed be thy Name" (Maiden) by Cradle of Filth, and I think Death did a really good job on "Painkiller" (Judas Priest). In Flames new one, "Land of Confusion" (Genesis) is pretty good too. Yeah, I could go on for a while.

It seems that a vast majority of great metal bands do an Iron Maiden cover at some point in their existance, it would be cool if Skyfire did one at some point. For some reason I think they'd be able to do great things with "Purgatory." Like make it into a totally new song. It would be fuckin sweet.

Most reviewers like to compare Skyfire to Children of Bodom. It would probably reinforce the comparisons, but a Bodom cover would be pretty cool considering they were pioneers of the genre that most people file Skyfire under. I personally am thinking something along the lines of "Mask of Sanity."

What if they pulled a Bodom and did a punk cover? Doing something popular would also help to get their name out, and although it's a cheap trick, it worked for Ethereal and Steel Prophet. One of the only popular punk songs I'll admit I like (there are more, but I won't admit it :loco: ) is "Dancing Through Sunday" by AFI. A Skyfire cover of it would be pretty cool, I think.

A Mercyful Fate cover would be a nice tribute to the man producing their third album. "Night of the Unborn" would give Henke a serious opportunity to show off his vocal skills. Although I dunno if anyone can scream that high, even Dani Filth.

Yeah, I'm getting more descriptive than I need to...

...So in summary, good covers:
Sentenced - The Trooper (Iron Maiden)
Cradle of Filth - Hallowed be thy Name (Iron Maiden)
Death - Painkiller (Judas Priest)
In Flames - Land of Confusion (Genesis)
Kalmah - Skin o' My Teeth (Megadeth)
Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Sick, Dirty, and Mean (Accept)
Soilwork - Burn (Deep Purple)

Songs Skyfire [(sh/c)ould/it would be cool if they did] cover:
Iron Maiden - Purgatory
Children of Bodom - Mask of Sanity
AFI - Dancing Through Sunday
Dismember - Of Fire
In Flames - Behind Space
Mercyful Fate - Night of the Unborn

[Edit] The one thing I will say about songs Skyfire should cover is that I think a cover shouldn't be done just because it would sound cool, but I think the band should really like it anyway, perhaps have drawn influences from it, and most importantly, be able to input the band's own style into the recreation of it so it's not just a duplicate of the original with Henke on vocals.

Hmm...One of the In Flames songs from Colony or Clayman would fit pretty well, a little different but not to weird, or mebbe some Dark Tranquility. They have a similiar guitar sound a lot of the time. CoB, of course, too.

there are a few really good covers, but most of them arent that great. most of the time the band doing the covering just plays the song exactly the same, and when they put in on a record (example: kalmah - skin of my teeth, eternal tears of sorrow - sick dirty and mean) they stick out so much becuase they are so much crappier than the rest of the songs on the albums. waaay simplistic/boring. unless they change it up a bit and make the song their own, i think they suck.

Actually went through and listened to some stuff. Here's what I came up with:Bodom-Mask of Sanity (as froosch said)and Silent Night Bodom Night, In Flames-Embody the Invisible, Dark Tranquility-Monochromatic Stains, Dream Theater-Peruvian Skies and Endles Sacrifice, Incubus-Sick Sad Little World. Add keys, up the tempo a little bit, I think those'd all be pretty groovey.

I think it would be better if they did a cover of a band that was in a different genre of music or metal than them. maiden covers are always good and so are power metal covers....

....dont touch mask of sanity its perfect!

I don't think that they will make a cover of a ballad type song like Dream Teater - Peruvian Skies... that would be really strange with all the songmelodies...

I vote for:
Rainbow - Stargazer
At The Gates - Windows
Carcass - Heartwork
King Diamond - Any track from Abigal

A Metallica cover would also be cool... I would hope for "Escape" or "Trapped Under Ice", both of them from Ride the Lightning...

That's why i wanna hear it :p but you're right, wouldn't be very Skyfireish i guess.

I dont think they should cover songs from bands within the same era as them like Children of Bodom. Its too obvious.

A Metallica cover would be awesome. I think Unforgiven, Dyers Eve, or Blackened would all be killer. I'm sorry, Escape would just be funny lol. That chorus is soooooooo cheesey

Maiden covers are always safe, I say go a different route than most bands and cover Judas be my Guide, Powerslave, Fear of the Dark, or Iron Maiden.

hm, i don't like covers that much as a regular song on an album; always makes me think the band had to fill the CD with something... - certainly there's some exceptions

So in summary, good covers:
Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Sick, Dirty, and Mean (Accept)
i like "Flight of Icarus" way much more!

Anyone have favorite covers?
those would be "The Spell" covered by Ancient Wisdom, "She" by Morgul  :loco: and for a real good laugh: "Summer Sun" covered by Uhrilehto

Doing something popular would also help to get their name out, and although it's a cheap trick, it worked for Ethereal and Steel Prophet.
they shouldn't try summer sun, haha! :p
