Covers (meaning remakes of songs, not album art) kick ass, as we all know, and thusly I decided to make a topic dedicated to them. Anyone have favorite covers? What about bands/songs that Skyfire should cover?
My personal favorite cover is the Sentenced version of "The Trooper" (Maiden). I'm also a big fan of "Hallowed be thy Name" (Maiden) by Cradle of Filth, and I think Death did a really good job on "Painkiller" (Judas Priest). In Flames new one, "Land of Confusion" (Genesis) is pretty good too. Yeah, I could go on for a while.
It seems that a vast majority of great metal bands do an Iron Maiden cover at some point in their existance, it would be cool if Skyfire did one at some point. For some reason I think they'd be able to do great things with "Purgatory." Like make it into a totally new song. It would be fuckin sweet.
Most reviewers like to compare Skyfire to Children of Bodom. It would probably reinforce the comparisons, but a Bodom cover would be pretty cool considering they were pioneers of the genre that most people file Skyfire under. I personally am thinking something along the lines of "Mask of Sanity."
What if they pulled a Bodom and did a punk cover? Doing something popular would also help to get their name out, and although it's a cheap trick, it worked for Ethereal and Steel Prophet. One of the only popular punk songs I'll admit I like (there are more, but I won't admit it
) is "Dancing Through Sunday" by AFI. A Skyfire cover of it would be pretty cool, I think.
A Mercyful Fate cover would be a nice tribute to the man producing their third album. "Night of the Unborn" would give Henke a serious opportunity to show off his vocal skills. Although I dunno if anyone can scream that high, even Dani Filth.
Yeah, I'm getting more descriptive than I need to...
...So in summary, good covers:
Sentenced - The Trooper (Iron Maiden)
Cradle of Filth - Hallowed be thy Name (Iron Maiden)
Death - Painkiller (Judas Priest)
In Flames - Land of Confusion (Genesis)
Kalmah - Skin o' My Teeth (Megadeth)
Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Sick, Dirty, and Mean (Accept)
Soilwork - Burn (Deep Purple)
Songs Skyfire [(sh/c)ould/it would be cool if they did] cover:
Iron Maiden - Purgatory
Children of Bodom - Mask of Sanity
AFI - Dancing Through Sunday
Dismember - Of Fire
In Flames - Behind Space
Mercyful Fate - Night of the Unborn
[Edit] The one thing I will say about songs Skyfire should cover is that I think a cover shouldn't be done just because it would sound cool, but I think the band should really like it anyway, perhaps have drawn influences from it, and most importantly, be able to input the band's own style into the recreation of it so it's not just a duplicate of the original with Henke on vocals.
