Just wanted to turn you guys on to some guitar players i've admired over the years since the 1980's (i'm 35)... some are metal guitarists and some aren't.. some you've heard of and some you haven't.. anyways enjoy and give your opinions on them:

Love Allan Holdsworth.

I'm not crazy about him at all... but I put him up because i know he is one of the fusion legends... i definetly prefer Al DiMeola over Holdsworth... DiMeola is easy on the ears to me... actually sounds like music... Holdsworth just doesn't sound like music at all to me... but to each his own... I know Eddie Van Halen cited Allan as a influence on him other then Clapton and others...

Nah.. But he is the wankiest. Him and Cooley focus way too much on technique and nowhere near enough on the music..
Some of my favorites:

Kiko Loureiro:

Vinnie Moore:

Steve Morse:

Chris Broderick:

Fernando Miyata:

I totally agree with Jari Maenpaa being on the list but he's not really legendary yet. :p

As for John Petrucci, he really sucks at guitar. He can barely play rhythm and his solos are all stiff and by the book.

Wankiest = Wah he's better than my favorite guitarist. lol

Chris Broderick is great. :)

kiko loureiro? Yea too bad he's not anywhere near that impressive if put on the spot.

MAB's good, less wanky than Cooley at least. But his playing is too straight-foward, scale runs and triad sweeps, and his rhythm playing is really boring =S

And sure, live Kiko makes some mistakes, but his song-writting is amazing and he can really get a crown going and what else do you really need from a concert :headbang: Most people aren't listening for perfect articulation and accuracy live :p

Songwriting is really an opinion, I find his songs dreadfully boring. I am not a huge Batio fan, I've only found 2 songs that were alright. Same with Cooley.

The only thing that made Outworld interesting for me was the vocals... Kelly Carpenter is awesome. :p

This isn't a great video of him but it's alright...

He also appears frequently on the Guitars SUCK videos.

He's certainly wanky.. i prefer players who can play wanky and slow in a song.. a combination... that is why I love Randy Rhoads playing so much... playing wanky all the time just sound robotic and not too melodic... but as for Cooley.... he's nothing new.... half a dozen other players do what he does and sound the same...

6 others? Out of how many millions who play? lol!!!! Randy was hardly wanky though.

Those million players out there play with themselves literally in their bedrooms... they are copy clones of the innovators or ones who are out and recording albums... so I wouldn't count them... as for Randy... he was wanky for his time... listen to the music that came out around his time... most if not all were playing the 70's pentatonic blues influenced style.... then Randy came along and started playing fast (yes he can play 32nd notes with accuracy...go listen to the Ozzy/Randy Tribute album), modal scales instead of pentatonic, two hand tapping, incorporate classical music influences into heavy metal etc... does this sound all familiar? we'll it is because it is what all wankers do ever since the debut of Randy... 3 people influenced the wankers.. Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malsteen... I suggest you listen to their albums for that time of 1978 - 1983 and compare it to what was out there in terms of Rock or Metal guitarists...
