Hello all,

Well, I recently joined one of my favorite hardcore/metal bands from the 90's/00's Nj Bloodline. Shameless promotion: www.myspace.com/njbloodline.

I've been on the search for another pickup as the Alnico V Motor City Afwayu wasn't cutting it for the tightness that I need for this stuff, so I opted to shell out the money and try a Bareknuckles Miracle Man to see what all the hype was about. I was super excited, but when it was installed and ready to go, I really wasn't a fan. It kiiiiind of has the EMG tightness, but kind of weak sounding to be honest. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think this pickup can justify the price tag.

Anyway, I remembered that I had an 81 and 85 laying around, so I popped the 81 into my Les Paul Standard...and came. I forgot what I love about EMGs for this type of music. Nothing can beat the tightness and harmonic richness in my opinion. Granted, I wouldn't use an EMG for anything but metal/hardcore/etc. but I guess that's a given. I'm officially in the EMG camp again. Man, the 81 in that huge chunk of mahogany is sooo brutal.

I actually had a wiring question. Basically, all I need for this band is the bridge pickup and a volume knob. Sooo, I disconnected all of the old electronics, taped off the wires, and wired the pickup straight to the volume pot. Now, this is where I'm a bit confused. We have some parts in the songs where I need the pickup selector to act as a kill switch. In the past it was simply a matter of backing the neck volume down and life was peachy. Now that I only have one volume and one pickup, is there a way to wire this up again? Right now all three pickup positions are the same. I believe I have a wire running from the same lug on the volume pot that is hardwired to the pickup. I know this isn't right.

Thoughts?

Oh also, I see a Mesa Roadster in my future! It feels good to be jamming with a band again to some heavy ass music.

You're going to want to wire it up like a normal LP (for the switch, that is), but just chop the neck pickup wire off. Bridge pickup -> switch -> volume -> output.

Hmmm, yeah that seems right. Should I leave the middle position lug out too? Or wire it all up and leave the top lug off? Also, I'm curious what the lug on the other side of the switch is for. I'm an idiot when it comes to the technicalities...I'm a visual guy lol.

thanks Jeff.

Thats kind of what my guitar is like now, the neck pickup is disconnected now, now I only have the Blackout connected. It was too awkward to get a active and passive set to work together, so I just chose to have it cut off!

On one side of the switch there should be four lugs (two meet in the middle) lugs... kinda like this

/ bridge pickup
\ middle (goes to switch)
/
\ neck pickup

and then on the other side there's a fatty lug that gets grounded (I always leave that thing off, you do not need to ground the switch).

Just wire the bridge lug to one side, the volume "input" (left most lug when looking at the bottom of the pot, lugs facing downward) gets wired to the middle lug of the switch, and then the center volume lug gets wired to the tip of the output jack.
