Cubase taking FOREVER to save

This has always been a problem for me as long as I can remember once a project gets to a decent size.. but this is just ridiculous. it's legitimately taking 5 minutes or even longer for cubase to save projects on my external harddrive (OWC mercury, firewire)

any advice?

Did you bounce the drums after editing?

I haven't had a save that took more than 5 seconds on very heavy projects. I'm using an internal HDD though so that might be the suspect.

yeah everything is bounced and its occuring even on projects with programmed drums, hell, it's even occuring on tiny projects.
