Can anyone explain the impact of ones culture on tastes in Metal? It just seems so interesting that ones nationality and culture will play a large part in what genre of metal is the most popular and prevalent in each country.

The Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans seem to have a predilection towards black metal. Italians, Spaniards and Latin Americans have the same urge towards power metal. Germans seem to like the old Judas Priest NWOBHM style of metal. Britons are hard to figure out, but there are a hell of alot of killer doom bands out of britain. Americans seem to be stuck in some sort of hair metal phase, with side loves of thrash and a underground of ultra-technical florida inspired death metal.

i think part of the reason we're stuck in the hair metal phase is that in america in order for a band to make a living at playing they almost always have to be somewhat commercial. americans tend to be a little more lazy in their listening habits and less open minded about music, if its not immediately entertaining we've got so much bombarding us its easy to just not bother. thats why metalcore is so popular over here, it relies on a more simple dynamic, play a riff, then slow it down and play it as a breakdown. simple, memorable, they found one good dynamic and are playing it to death.josh.
