Damnation Digipack?

Speaking of digipaks, how long have they been around? Today I received a Dream Theater promo from 1994 that was a digipack, but I didn't think it was going to be one since it's so old. So, when were they first brought into use?

Vinyl replica digipacks like the IA special edition (which I own anyway because I bought it on the day of release) suck, but I normally don't have a problem with alternate packaging...
