I've noticed that there aren't very many really dark sounding records from bands on (relatively) major labels. Can anyone think of any, especially any from 2000 onwards?

This is the sort of thing I'm talking about

Considered dead and pretty much all of the early nineties Scott Burns stuff is a great example.

Part of what makes this so dark is the music, but it's still fucking bleak.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by dark, it's kinda subjective

Just some super atmospheric productions and very dark, spine chilling music.
Whenever I feel very zoned out or don't feel so good, this is an example of the kinda stuff I listen.
To me atmosphere isn't so much about the mix (hence why I don't think Slayer has any atmosphere at all, which isn't necessarily a bad thing) itself but also the music.
Post metal is a genre that has it in spades, which is why I love Isis and Agalloch so much

Kind of, but i think if you applied the post rock sound, to say one of the songs off of divine intervention it wouldn't really have the same effect. Even though the production is an important part of that kind of stuff, I'd say that the music has more of an influence over the overall vibe.

dark in terms of vibe or dark in terms of brightness?
as far as vibe goes, id say scott burns stuff is the best it ever got, a lot of sunn's earlier mixes are very deep, dark and vibey though.
and then pretty much every mix the band Portal has ever had is extremely dark (again in terms of vibe)

i think i am the only person who cant get into everything is fire.
i like the production though

Dark is very subjective as are most terms used to describe music in general. As Gareth mentioned, are we talking about vibe? Sound as in the opposite of a bright production? Atmosphere/Atmospheric?

If someone said to me that a production sounded dark, I'm unsure I would think that was a good thing as I think of it more in terms of sound - as in the production is too dark or too bright. I can think of several albums that I think have a dark production for what would be considered norms - one of them the latest Dark Empire disk "Humanity Dethroned", for some reason I think it has a "dark" vibe/sound that while I like the music, I'm not fond of the production - the drums are too upfront, the guitars at times a bit muffled/muddy, overall a very unbalanced mix.

Just to clarify - I'm not thinking of it in terms of "dark" heavy metal vs. heavy metal as a nomenclature i.e. sub-genre.

As far as "dark" vibe goes, I'd go all the way back to, in my mind, the first true heavy metal album - "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath - it has the darkest, evilest vibe going - the opening to that album sets such an ominous vibe - one of being dropped into a void where there is no return.

What is this that stands before me?
Figure in black which points at me
Turn around quick, and start to run
Find out I'm the chosen one
Oh nooo!

With the "Diabolus in Musica" (Diminished 5th) in the main riff playing along - pure evil :headbang:

Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler simply write such awesome evil riffs and they set the bar high with the very first song on their very first album.

Dark, as in a tonal characteristic, like you get with old strings.
The opposite of Rust in Peace and Day of Mourning by Despised Icon.

I suppose it's almost muddy, to a point.

i never got the feeling any of the muddyness of the guitar tones in these old dirtier recordings, just from weird amps and weird tones and weird mic positions.
like you listen to any morbid angel and you can tell they had hella new strings on there

and speaking of morbid angel
I LOVE THIS MIX. \m/ and the lead tones on this album are the best thing ive ever heard

That's why i didn't describe it as muddy at first, because it's not. It's still fairly articulate.

Gotta agree with you on the lead tones on gateways, they're fucking epic.
I think a lot of it has to do with rutan, at least on his solo's, because it's very similar to what he had on the first hate eternal album (and all subsequent ones).
Gateways in general just kicks ass. The soloing in summoning redemption, and the whole opening of the gates is fucking sick :headbang:

early 2000's that wasnt it?
hidden hands is a great album, got a really cool atmosphere to it compared to the later ones
