I recently acquired an HD rig with a Digidesign 882 20. The 882 20 outputs 1 and 2 are going to my monitors. Is there a way I can control the volume coming out of the rig using some sort of external volume knob? Maybe like a usb control? I don't want to have to use my mouse to control the volume coming out of the speakers. Thanks, GGI

A monitor controller, such as this one at it's simplest: http://www.dv247.com/studio-equipment/tc-electronic-level-pilot-monitor-volume-controller--60711

i recently bought the tc electronic levle pilot, its about 60 euros and is a passive volume controller!
really nice, im using those with my event opals.

you should always use an analog volume controller, because if you control your levels digitally, your not using all bits, especialy on low volumes
digital levelers sound really poor.

I have the Tc Level Pilot as well. One of my best purchases. Flawless sound quality, reliable and so smoooth.

Really glad I ventured into here, I think my next purchase is going to be a Level Pilot!

Does the stereo image drift with the level pilot at all at lower levels? Resistor thresholds have a way of doing this. Does it have the ability to switch between multiple input sources and also sum to mono?

I've been looking for a decent transparent (active) monitor controller for a while, but can't find anything that's really decent short of the Avocet.

Ermz: Looks like the Level Pilot is a simple stereo volume controller. 2x XLR inputs and 2x XLR outputs.

For me it's perfect, I don't check in mono (probably should haha) and only need 1 input source (Dell desktop speakers are hooked into headphone output 1). The 2626 master volume is stepped which is really annoying sometimes. Having continuous control and being really simple are the attractive features for me.

yeah it drifts at the lowest volumes, but thats not a big issue (atleast forme)

summing to mono can easily be done incubase/pt.

no switching between different inputs though

I own the M-patch2. Unfortunately it suffers from stereo field drift at lower levels, the mono sum colors the signals and the pots wear out after a while causing crackling noises as you dial the attenuator.

Ultimately it seems decent active controllers are the only way to go.

I've had mine since last summer and it's working fine. I think I'll just invest in a rotary switch type attenuator and put it in the M-Patch 2 when the pot wears out...

I've got a Mackie Big Knob. http://www.mackie.com/products/bigknob/

I had the same problem a I was going to buy one of those usb knobs but I thought about it. I'm always going to need to switch between monitors a/b/c etc. I didn't want drivers etc, so I went for the big knob. It is just perfect. One of the best bits of gear I ever bought.
