DAW recording etc w/o a computer

I started with a Yamaha AW16G, which can record all 8 inputs simultaneously, but honestly doing everything with a pc totally changed the game. The first project I did using the pc, I actually burned all raw tracks for a whole album off the AW16G, then imported them into reaper, mixed them to stereo tracks, imported back into the aw16g and then track vocals over them. Finally, burned vocals to disc and imported them into the pc mixes to get a finished product. So in essence, I was bouncing down like one would using tape or other track constraints. Pain in the ass.

The latest version is the AW-1600 which the biggest and most important change in my eyes is the combo inputs for all channels.

I used a whole bunch of all in one multitrack recorders before I got into Pro Tools.

Zoom MRS802
Yamaha AW16G
Alesis HD24

They're incredibly limited compared to what even the most modest of DAW's can do though.

thanks for the wonderful suggestions.
I play guitar i need something that can do drums/bass/etc
like a boss br 80?

Just a guess that a Radar type system is WAY beyond your means at the moment. I'm going to go ahead and assume you have a computer if you're posting on the internet? There are tons of cheap usb interfaces, Reaper is ultra cheap, ez drummer is ultra cheap. There are free guitar sims. That's the safest route man. I used to record through one of the Boss hard disk recorders. Can't remember the model. It sucked. A modest investment in a computer based setup will be much easier to deal with.

I've always liked the idea of recording without a computer - having a real mixer and no screen - just ears - has always appealed to me. But sadly i agree with everyone here. Unless you have shitloads of money for a radar system or something like that you're better off with a modest computer.

thanks. I need something compact and that i can use and record when i travel or away from the computer. I don't need high quality.. something that has drums/bass etc.. so i'm leaning toward the boss br 80
any advice?

Oh. well in that case you can probably use anything that has the features you need. I'd say go into a shop and grab the sturdiest looking one they have that does what you want.

Also consider looking for like iPhone apps and whatnot. I assume this is just so you don't forget stuff?
