ddrum triggers bottom heads?

Does this work? Just curious. I saw a couple pics in the last couple weeks with drummers mounting them on the bottom tom heads.

In fact, there is a picture of scott travis in the modern drummer with this type of setup.

whats the advantage in this? less likely to be hit by a stick when the drummer is playing?

Oh, if you didn't mention Scott Travis, I would have thought "Well, yeah, I've seen engineers put a microphone in the center of a 4x12 cab (yes, between the speakers)... there are pricks everywhere", but now... Maybe it's just to dampen the skins, lol
