Hey, newbie here trying to broaden his horizons and looking for some awesome death metal. I really dont have much experience so even most of the classics would probably be new for me. Most of my stuff so far is the "Gothenburg metal" type, but thats mostly because they are the biggest names around here. I have nothing against good traditional death metal :Spin:

Some of the stuff I've liked so far:

Opeth - They're definately my fav so far, but not exactly easy listening
Amon Amarth - I think I'd like them even more without the Viking stuff
Arch Enemy - Love the guitars
Amorphis - Been listening to their old stuff before I was really "into" metal, its awesome, new stuff is okay too

And some I havent really liked:

Dark Tranquility - Just found it boring
In Flames - Meh, at least the new stuff

Any recommendations would be welcome, but preferrably nothing too brutal.

Insomnium - All 3 Albums. Get Above the Weeping World first...
In Flames - The Jester Race & Colony
Arsis - We are the Nightmare & A Celebration of Guilt
Carcass - Heatwork
Crocell - The God We Drowned
Illdisposed - 1800 Vindication & There's Something Rotten in the State of Denmark
Nightrage - Sweet Vengeance
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Be'lakor - The Frail Tide
Red Descending - Where Dreams Come to Die

Melodic Death:

At The Gates
Soilwork (Old)
Darkane (first album)
Intestine Baalism
Skyfire
Kalmah
Dawn Of Dreams
Unanimated
Disarmonia Mundi

Carcass
Cattle Decapitation
Death
Cryptopsy
Deicide
Dissection
Putrid Pile
Gorgoroth
Necrophagist

Any recommendations would be welcome, but preferrably nothing too brutal.

:p

Here's some classic death metal for ya, if you want to dig deeper into the genre that is:

Miasma - Changes
Demilich - Nespithe
Death - Leprosy
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Demigod - Slumber Of Sullen Eyes
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum
The Chasm - Deathcult For Eternity: The Triumph
Massacra - Final Holocaust
Dismember - Like An Everflowing Stream
Fleshcrawl - Descend Into The Absurd
Infester - To The Depths... In Degradation

Hypocrisy ~ 10 Years of Chaos and Confusion might be a nice listen for you... as they were originally death metal, then turned to melodic death metal... both styles they played very well... and it spans their stuff really nicely.

Edit: for Therion, ....of Darkness is also really good.

Some of the stuff from 10YoCaC...

Pleasure of Molestation

Fire in the Sky

Deathrow (No Regrets)

Killing Art

Try:
Anacrusis (not death metal) - Screams And Whispers
Orphaned Land - Mabool
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenfris

Amon Amarth - I think I'd like them even more without the Viking stuff
Arch Enemy - Love the guitars
Try Paths of Possession and Kreator's last two (not DM).

Withhold judgement on these until you've heard DT's The Gallery and IF's The Jester Race.

Captain Obvious Time:
Morbid Angel
Death

It doesnt happen when you talk about them in the recommendations forum... it happens when you talk about them when referring to death metal. :Smug:
