okay... uh...

i dont know if i'm doing my vocals right or not... but.... they sound alright through a mic, or when i record them on the computer and raise the volume level, then they sounds pretty good... however, when i do them in person, without a mic and no amplification, people tell me that i'm "whispering"... just because i'm not doing it "deep enough"... i don't get it... if i do it like they're doing it, then i can seriously damage my vocal chords... when i do it, i use the least amount of vocal chord usage, and mainly it's all coming from my gut... is this the correct way or what?

When would you do the growling without mic and amplification anyway? Of course, the growls only really sound majestic and punch a hole through the wall if they have proper amplification. There's no way you could scream or growl over guitars and drums even at only a moderate volume. So, I guess you should be fine! It's true that you should use your "guts" more. In fact, you should use your diaphragm. This way you can get loud and powerful growls without straining your vocal cords. But this technique takes training.

Try this several times.

It's one of the trickiest death parts I have, since there are some growling unusual words.

Dunno which effect this has on you, but repeating such little parts over and over again was good training for me.

If you're a beginner try not to gulp or you will end up loosing your growling voice.

I had a similar problem... I recorded by cupping mics which frankly is cheating. My friends told me it was like whispering, but in my head it was just Akerfeldt style. Either way, when it came to playing with one of my bands and I tried it through a mic without cupping the mic it was inaudible even at a mega high vol. Luckily I fell across a new technique, which unfortunately can only be done loud (so I cant practice with family in the house). You need to close your throat off kind of and breath hard out of your nose, let the sound come from your chest and just distort everything coming up through your mouth. It's loud but its hard to hit notes with it (you can either do it mega deep, mega high or mid toe but its difficult to move around). Its similar to Stanne, problem is I know If I do screemed vocals in my band, people will probably see my vox as a bad attempt at the Stannesque mellodic grunt.

The best word to practice on for me is "Deicide" you can hold any of the vowels and its got 2 'Ds' which are stop points syllable wise.
