I am changing out my entire room. I still live with the 'rents (I'm only 19 ) but they are ok with me really turning my room into what I need for my recording and music. It is a basic room right now with a bed, a computer desk that's halfway into the cloest to make space and a slew of guitars and amps. I plan on painting the walls, but don't know what color to paint them... I want something inspiring, but not *too* bright that it gives me a headache to be in here for an extended period of time. I have wood floors, so I am planning on getting a large rug. I also plan on building some DIY bass traps with my dad. He is a general contractor, so he's good with all that stuff. lol. Also, he said we could go all out and put some "ambient" lighting in here. So yah, this whole message has kind of been a mess of ideas, so pretty much:

What would be a good color scheme to go for in a home studio?
Does a bed play a big part in acoustics?
Should I do some "ambient" lighting?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. :)

Personally I'd stick with lighter colours like yellows, creams etc as I thick dark colours, while making a place feel very warm, will also make it seem small and stuffy rather than light and fresh with lighter colours. Nice calm colours to help keep the stress down in those long sessions lol ;-) I'm a fan of the ambient lighting myself, can create a nice mood that inspires you at times, but I wouldn't say its at all necessary. It's a nice feature to include if you can I guess. Best of luck with your project :-D

Dude, I agree 100% with all of this, especially the lighter colors bit - also, for inexpensive ambient lighting, just get those tall lamps (like the one in that "Dirty Mind" motivational poster or whatever it is), and then desk lamps with *gasp* lampshades - in other words, no direct light, ugghh (especially overhead light, I feel like I'm in a subway car)

Or you could try this particular repurposing :D

I miss that room :(

+1 on those ideas, thats exactly what I do, upturned table lamps and tall lamps. Nice and cheap too. I have one flurescent light too that is handy when connecting up leads or looking for a stray plectrum that wanders off

Do the ambient lighting. Stick with lighter colours, white walls and a hardwood/ laminate floor looks pimp. Maybe paint one of the walls a darker colour like red or deep blue.

If you are doing wall treatments, you might be able to get by with darker colors on the walls, providing the wall treatments are lighter. I'm a fan of richer colors in a studio space, I have mine a deep blue and I think it creates a great mood. I use wire lights (halogen) for indirect and ambient lighting. Something about the combination puts me right at ease, and my space is SMALL.

Yeah most of the nicer places I've been to or even just seen in pics, as well as the one I worked at, have had darker colored walls... hell, Sneap's room has stone walls haha. So I dunno about the lighter colors idea, not saying jump on the bandwagon but it's coincidental the majority has it that way :)

Totally agree with indirect and ambient lighting, I never turn on the ceiling light at all. In fact I think it's been burned out for a while now lulz.
