Defining the role of Producer

For me, I've always struggled with how a producer fits into metal music. Does this person give the band direction, give suggestions for how songs go, or just generally set up equipment and record them, and fine tune the sounds? I'm looking to start doing some recording of other projects myself, and I'm wondering what the line between producer and engineer is.

The role of the producer definitely depends on what role he himself wants to take and how much of integrity the band itself has. It can change from just twisting the knobs, to structure whole songs.

The old fashioned idea of a producer is just a guy that directs the bands sessions, maybe makes suggestions and leaves the engineer to do the rest.

Being a student in an audio engineering course and having gone through this in class last week, this is what we came up with:
The producer's main roll is to oversee the success of the project within the budget.
Some other minor (sort of) rolls are:
Contracting musos and engineers
Studio bookings
Deal with all the people involved
Take care of legals
A producer may also, at the permision of the band/lable, write/arrange the songs.

Of course thats just generally speaking.

Im working with a band at the moment ( www.mabofficial.com ) who have come to me to get a heavier sound. At the moment producing for me involves liasing with the manager regularly, engineering, assisting with lyrics and pronounciation ( as italian is their 1st language). Ive arranged the studio time. Ive arranged the accomodation and the food. Basically as well as bringing out the best in the 4 musicians to get the very best performances I can from them everytime and capturing it in perfect fidelity im managing their lives for the duration. At the moment for me producing is being the 5th member of the band, the fresh ears and the accountant.

Gentlemen, today the band leave me and head home. 90% of the work is done. At 3am this morning we realised we were getting no where with the mixes so the 4 metal fairies are going home and leaving me to do the mix tonight.
