Definitive band in each genre

Doom : Saint Vitus

uhh... anyone heard of Black Sabbath? :)

Death : Death

I don't know what band to say for death metal, but it's not Death... most of their stuff is thrash. :)

Black Metal : Cradle of Filth (I just have to disagree about Venom if anybody wants to say it ;p)

Using Cradle or Dimmu for black metal would be like saying In Flames for death metal. :) I'd go with Bathory... that way, you've got the brutal, Satanic stuff covered in addition to the Viking black metal.

Tech-metal : Cynic

Watchtower is more well-known and has twice as many discs. ;)

What part of "CURRENT" didn't you guys understand? Some people are naming off bands that aren't even close to being the defining "CURRENT" band in their respective genres. Some of the bands listed aren't really all that active these days.

Black Sabbath = Hard blues rock band. Saint Vitus did more for the doom sound than Black Sabbath imo, even if they were heavily influenced by Sabbath.

I thought about Watchtower too. But they only had 2 tech albums. 2 compared to 1 isn't that big of a deal =p Cynic more defines the sound than Watchtower's Control and Resistance imo.

To me, early Cradle of Filth best defines black metal. Bathory, Mayhem, and all that shit could be used too I guess.

In Flames defines melodic death/gothenburg metal better than Dark Tranquility imo. Especially their early stuff.

At the Gates better defines metalcore than anything else ;)

My Choices are as follows:

Progressive Metal : SHADOW GALLERY
Power Metal : PRIMAL FEAR
Traditional Metal : IRON MAIDEN
Doom : SOLITUDE AETURNUS
Death : DIMMU BIORGI
Black Metal : CARPATHIAN FORREST
Tech-metal : CYNIC
prog-death : OPETH
Folk-metal : FINNTROLL
Thrash : SLAYER
neo-classical metal : ARTENSION
funk-metal : ??????
Fusion-Metal : PLANET X(i think)
nu-metal : who cares
pop metal: AC/DC

Actually, think I'll put Emperor in for black metal now that I think more about it. Cradle of Filth.. whatever. If you don't like them, or think their newer stuff isn't too black anymore go ahead. But for me black metal is more than just a series of untalented bands on bad recordings chortling about how they hate Christianity and everything else.

That's ridiculous and ignorant. Listen to Naglfar or DragonLord, you clearly aren't presenting yourself in the sub-genre if you only know Filth, Mayhem and Emperor. Also, Sigh's latest album is some good showing, but its more avant-agarde/black than black.

I like Naglfar a lot. Same with Dragonlord. I don't hear black in Dragonlord so much as I do thrash though. But I really like Rapture. Haven't listened to Black Wings of Destiny. Sigh is awesome. And I agree more avant-garde than black.

Other black metal bands I like are Mercyful Fate (though some tell me this isn't black metal???), Celtic Frost, Amon Amarth ( I don't hear it as black metal, but some do), Fintroll, Carpathian Forest, Agalloch, Bal-Sagoth, Arcturus (also one of the greatest bands ever), Borknagar, Wolves in the Throne Room, Drudkh, Ludicra, In the woods..., Hollenthon (one of the best metal bands), Graveworm (awesome), Falkenbach (one of my favorites), and Wintersun.

So I know plenty more than those 3 you listed. Not sure why you interpreted differently.

Fate - Heavy
Celtic - Heavy
Amon - Melodeath
Finntroll - Purely folk
Wintersun - Viking, no black at all really
Falkenbach - Viking

I still dont see how u dont see black metal in dragonlord, must be listening to the wrong band

And I said that because if you list cradle of filth you clearly don't know what black metal is and they in very little ways(if at all) represent that

Interesting how genres keep changing in Metal. Is this the only kind of music in which this phenomenon happens?

What was once Death Metal is now Thrash. Death vox aren't Death vox anymore, and Black vox aren't Black vox anymore. Now they're just Extreme Vox of which there are two types. Heavy Metal is now Power, which is strange scince Melodic Metal is also Power. Gothenburg/Melodeath is now "Extreme Power" although it was DragonForce who first claimed that phrase and there's not a growl in sight there. If that wasn't confusing enough in this thread one of the most well known Power Metal bands isn't Power Metal.

The original Metal Bands apparently weren't ever Metal to begin with. The two universally accepted best American Metal guitarists in the 80's turned out to be Hard Rock musicians. Everything with a female vocalist is Gothic Metal. Death Metal bands with painted faces are Black Metal bands, but Power Metal bands with painted faces are still Power Metal bands.

While you're all rushing around to pigeonhole each and every band into the most limited devisable sub-genre definition possible, and rewriting history... I'll just listen to metal, and keep the genres to the basics. You'll have to forgive me if I just call Falconer Power Metal and not Powerfolkmelodicspeed Metal.

One can scoff at the current offerings from Cradle Of Filth like "Midian," and dismiss it as Neosymphonicgothicmallblack Nu-Metal. Can't much argue that point. However, when I plug in "Vempire or Dark Faerytales" I'm pretty sure I'm listening to Black Metal.

And Rhapsody can't be the Definitive Power Metal band, because they're Hollywood Sound Score Metal. So says them.

To the original question I'd say in the U.S. they are Dream Theater and DragonForce based on current popularity. Too bad I'm not a big fan of either.

Shhh, don't let Ruthven hear you say that. :)

+1

To me, there are two types of metal:

  • the kind I like
  • the kind I don't like

One can scoff at the current offerings from Cradle Of Filth like "Midian," and dismiss it as Neosymphonicgothicmallblack Nu-Metal. Can't much argue that point. However, when I plug in "Vempire or Dark Faerytales" I'm pretty sure I'm listening to Black Metal.

Agreed. CoF nowadays isn't particularly grim or black, but I still like them. Midian isn't particularly 'recent' nowadays either, and yet, I find it to be one of my faves from them overall.

Still, CoF (or Dimmu) are the 'gateway' or 'portal' bands into the darker realms of black-metal, so, in the original spirit of this thread, they could be considered the current defining bands of that genre. There are many other current bands working the BM field (Cheiron listed many great ones), but none of them stands out to me as a "gateway" band...yet.

It seems like Blackmore is generally credited with bringing neoclassical guitar to rock music... however, considering Rainbow to be "metal" probably depends on who you talk to.

Stargazer and especially Kill the King (among a few others) definitely warrants such a discussion about Rainbow.

I'll call Blackmore as important a guitar player in metal's history as Tony Iommi, and Deep Purple as more important an influence to the music discussed on this forum than Black Sabbath.

Progressive Metal : Pain of Salvation
Power Metal : Masterplan was on their way until lineup changes, but I think Nocturnal Rites takes this one IMHO
Traditional Metal : Iron Maiden
Doom : Katatonia
Death : Bloodbath
Black Metal : Emperor and Borknagar tie
Tech-metal : Decapitated and Necrophagist tie
prog-death : Opeth
Folk-metal : Finntroll
neo-classical metal : Symphony X (I consider them neo-classical prog)
funk-metal : Primus
Fusion-Metal : Planet X
nu-metal : Slipknot and Mudvayne tie
pop metal: Shinedown (I consider them metal)
melodeath: Soilwork

What did you expect? You're reading a thread which says "genre" right in the subject header.

Agree....

Gotta agree on this one as well....

Definately agree!!!! Cynic falls more into the realm of "fusion metal" than technical IMO....

You can't rewrite history booB. Death was a Death Metal band. "Scream Bloody Gore" is credited as being the catalyst which launched the Florida Death Metal explosion in the 1980's. Although it may not be the case currently Death was without a doubt THE definiative Death Metal band of their day.

Same.

haha, I'm about as big of a black metal elitist that you will find on this board, but even I'll admit that CoF's earlier stuff is undeniably black metal.

looks like last.fm users all agree with you, as cradle of filths most dominant genre tag is black metal

http://www.last.fm/music/Cradle+of+Filth

i dont even like black metal, especially not cradle of filth, but i felt compelled to put it in here
