The subgenre has its roots in bands like Deadguy, Converge, Kiss It Goodbye, Training for Utopia, Botch, Turmoil, Coalesce, Bloodlet, Groundwork, Resurrection, Acme, Nerv, Into the Moat and Starkweather.
The music is usually filled with discordant, somewhat technical riffing, complex time signatures and song structures, and passionate, energetic vocals. Anyway that's basically a bullshit genre. It's good for describing bands (just like viking metal, but I don't really want to get into that!), but not much else. It sounds stupid too!

I'd say so. I've heard Ion Dissonance described as mathcore and they remind me quite a bit of Meshuggah. Meshuggah also has that technicality thing going on.
