Definitive band in each genre

While you're all rushing around to pigeonhole each and every band into the most limited devisable sub-genre definition possible, and rewriting history... I'll just listen to metal, and keep the genres to the basics. You'll have to forgive me if I just call Falconer Power Metal and not Powerfolkmelodicspeed Metal.

Some people can get a bit ridiculous as far as genre-labeling goes, but they have a point. As metal's sound expands, more genres are needed. You can't fit everything into the basic death/black/power/prog/heavy/doom/folk/thrash. When bands come up with creative and new sounds that defy classification, a new subgenre may be necessary.

Bloody Hell! This thread has gotten off the beaten track...and then some. When females say men can't read instructions....they're dead right.

DT is a good guess I would say but they are so boring I can't enjoy 'em

I think this is the first time I've ever agreed with you on a band being "boring", man. But, yeah, I can't really enjoy DT either.

I don't know what band to say for death metal, but it's not Death... most of their stuff is thrash. :)

I'd say Possessed when it comes to Death Metal.

As far as Power/Prog go, I'd say Dream Theater for Prog (though like I said, I can't get into them) and Helloween for Power.

Black I'd say Immortal.

Thrash - old Metallica.

Melodeath: Dark Tranquillity

Too lazy to do any of the others.

Black I'd say Immortal.

Melodeath: Dark Tranquillity

I definitely agree on Dark Tranquillity; one of the few bands of the "Gothenburg scene" who haven't totally changed their sound.

Immortal isn't truly 'current' so it would be hard for them to be the defining black metal band (although I love 'em).
Emperor has reunited lately and played some shows, though....... :kickass:

My God! Has anyone on this board heard of Mayhem? If anyone defines what Black metal is, its Mayhem. If you did not have Mayhem, then Emperor, Immortal and Dissection would not even exist.

And if you didn't have Bathory, Mayhem wouldn't exist. What's your point?
Also, Mayhem didn't release their first full-length album until after Immortal, and they did it at about the same time as Emperor and Dissection.
