Deppresion Metal

other than those already mentioned some obvious and less obvious bands that fit the dark metal vibe but usually get categorized in other genres are:

A Lower Deep
Opeth
Nevermore
Evergrey
Type O Negative
Tiamat
Novembre
Lake of Tears
My Dying Bride
November's Doom

You think 'Cold White Light' and 'Funeral Album' are "pop-rock"?

Well, in relative terms, at least. Compare them to Anathema, Agalloch, Tiamat (mid-period), My Dying Bride, On Thorns I Lay, Moonspell, or most of the other bands mentioned in this thread. Sentenced was clearly the closest thing to a "rock band". Their albums were made of 4-5 minute songs with fairly straightforward structures, packed with monster hooks that are easy to sing along with, and generally at a snappier tempo than those other bands.

The term "pop-rock" should not be read pejoratively! Like I said, Sentenced is one of my favorite bands, and 'The Cold White Light', their most slickly-produced and easily-digestible album, may be my favorite.

The first Poisonblack is great, plus Laihala doesn't sing on it, just plays guitar. That's the way it should've stayed. The second Poisonblack effort, Lust Stain Despair is good, but Laihala is both singing and playing guitar. The latest Poisonblack is depressing, but because it SUCKS so bad!!! Basically, Laihala has stripped Poisonblack from being a really good goth metal band to a run of the mill Nickleblack wannabe band...all within two releases! :erk:

Agreed re: the third album and the direction they've gone, but I think the song-writing on the second one is the strongest despite the change of vox.

Good list here... I would especially recommend checking out Agalloch, Anathema, and Moonspell.

The only other band that Id like to throw out there isnt really metal.... but I know a bunch of metal heads who like them. Its a two man setup, one used to be in Anathema.

Thanks, and Antimatter is a good reference point!

Frozen is one of the most depressing albums I have ever heard, and I love it. :) Aside from what's already been mentioned, I'd also put The Bronx Casket Co. - s/t in this category (the albums that came after it were pure garbage).

Almost agree, I still put Down on top of Frozen re: the depression factor, but both are stellar albums...my two faves from them in this era. Amok and Love & Death are required listening as well...I only have Sweet Home Transylvania by The BCC, never heard the S/T...Sweet Home is average at best though.

...which is why I recommended Darkseed stuff, because they have a good share of songs just like that...very dark, angry rock 'n roll... but at the same time, songs which have much more of a depressive or doomy side too. I love that kind of stuff. 'Frozen' and 'The Cold White Light' are my favorite Sentenced of that era of their sound..

In addition to the Darkseed ones posted I would also name the songs 'Ultimate Darkness', 'Counting Moments', and 'Echoes of Tomorrow' as good entry points..

It is catchy, for sure. I wasn't trying to be an ass. It's just that when I hear "pop-rock" I think Collective Soul and Goo Goo Dolls. But I guess compared to 'North From Here', 'The Cold White Light' is pretty poppy.

Cheers! :kickass:

I'd have to say My Dying Bride's Turn Loose The Swans is the most depressing album for me.

I love Sentenced but don't hear a lot of similarity with Poisonblack, who I don't really like care for. I can check them out again.
