The guitar tone is totally inconsistent across all of the songs, like he was flipping through random pod presets during tracking. The drums sound like someone just leaning to use BFD. Imo, the only decent production is the song "Volcano." Too bad the rest of the album couldn't have been recorded the same way.

I get that he doesn't have a huge budget for recording quality, but I've heard better mixes in the rate my mix section.:Smug:

It was produced/engineered by Ulrich Wild who has some serious genre-defining albums under his belt. My guess is that his costs are about as high budget as you can get.

Both albums in fact were produced by him, and I can't say I've really been impressed by either production. Sad thing is, there are so many people on this forum that could do as good or better with the production.

I think the first album had a good dark sound. Not too much high end, but works well. The drums are also done by a Gene fucking Hoglan, so I don't really know where that BFD reference came from.

I picked this cd up yesterday after reading this thread (I haven't watched the show in a long time and didn't know another cd was out)...

Listened to it on the way into work today... from what I remember of the first cd, this one sounds better all around...

besides, the production doesn't sound horrible at all so I just enjoy the music...

98% of the time I find that its hard for me to listen beyond production these days and just listen for the music...

By the way Volcano is SICK !!!

+1, somehow that song managed to get a good mix as well!

i'm not saying at all that these guys aren't talented musicians! it's simply from a production stand point. i think its mainly the hi-hat cymbals that have a cheap quality about them.

I think the album is awesome, i love it, i've watched metalocalypse since the first season and have both cds

the first album seemed to have alot more epic writing in it, this one seems to have alot more of a darker feel to it...

on this album Brendon's vocals are pushed alot further than on the first album... Gears is my favourite...

i just went to the dethklok tour last night, and have to leave 4 songs into their set

call me crazy, but i couldn't stand watching a damned cartoon band playing after seeing converge and mastodon rip the place apart

meh, i agree its different to see them after a real band onstage… but to be fair, converge and mastadon are different styles…

i like it…

both albums made walking to work on my birthday that little bit better…

"Birthday Dethday!!" :kickass::kickass:

whats the opinion on the guitar tone in Black Fire Upon Us??

Ironically the cartoon band has brought out one of the best death metal albums since the death of the Florida scene.

Death metal today is studio core. Solos played on fat strings, an odd time signature thrown in here and there and the craft is lost.

Converge? Just another band getting it wrong. Give me Nathan Explosion over shitty emo screams over spaz core wank anyday.

:puke:

DIE FOR DK!

As for the new one. I have a feeling that he had been sitting on most of the riffs from the first album for a loooong time.

So I think the riffs are lacking a little on the new one. And there is a little too much going on which can be hard to mix and master.

The first was a 9 out of 10. Second a 7.
