Triggers are a good thing to have even if you're not planning on using samples, i read in an interview with andy a few years ago that a good idea is to record using triggers as well, then bring the trigger hits forward a little bit and sidechain them into the gates for toms and snares... again, something i'd love to try

If anyone saw Gene Hoglan fill in for Opeth, it's painfully obvious that he 100% triggers the kick, no sense arguing that.

yes, you can use triggers to open gates.
