I read somewhere (Avantgarde HP?) that the release of a new album is planned for 2004.

I've read the same. There was an Avantgarde Music news blurb on how they were delaying "Brave Yesterdays" in order for it not to collide with "Viva Emptiness", and they also wrote:

"After his Katatonia's duties will be over (in terms of touring on "Viva emptyness") Blakkheim will concentrate around this fall on a new DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE album, to be released by AVANTGARDE MUSIC at the beginning of 2004."

So there you have it.
