I am making my first bass tone and I want a tone that smacks the hell out of you. Pretty much Nolly's tones from the band Periphery.

His bass tones are always godly.

I know how to make a decent sounding rhythm and tone and lead but I have never touched with bass tones. So I need advice to get that massive tone but will also make for a good low end in the mix.

here is another example. The bass is kicking ass in combination with the guitar.

How can I begin to dial something like that?

Sounds like he's basically using a distorted axe tone with the b7k and compression to tighten it up.

I'm pretty sure he used to just use the b7k as his main distortion, I could be wrong on that though.

Honestly, if you tracked a clean DI, splitting up the signal into a solid low end track and one (or more) distortion tracks that blend well/cut with the guitars should give you good results.

I might be wrong but I think the bass tone in this soundcloud samples is less distorted than his live Periphery tone. Look at this one: https://soundcloud.com/nolly/ceramic-black-hawk-7-test There is a backing track included where you can hear drums + bass and it sounds to me that the bass isn't that distorted. Maybe it just was DI + B7K. But keep in mind that you're DI has to sound damn good by itself (good bass and good playing), otherwise there is no chance to get a good bass tone.

Maybe you could try ask himself at http://ask.fm/NollyPeriphery/ or so ^^ (or here on the board of course)
