Dimmu Borgir- In Sorte Diaboli

I really like Monotheist...but I like doom metal a lot as well, so there you go. Celtic Frost did this blackened doom metal thing with Monotheist and I thought it was great. There aren't enough good doom metal bands anymore...and there are way too many At The Gates rip-offs. This new take on Swedish Melodic Death Metal/Gothenburg Scene is horrible...just plain horrible. These bands can't touch the albums like Whoracle, A Predator's Portrait, Damage Done, etc.

I swear I'm going to scream if I see one more band doing a polka beat with screaming vocals.

There is no more creativity, except for a few bands, and Nevermore is the most creative, IMO. There is no other band like Nevermore unless you count Communic...but they're a little more than "influenced" by Nevermore, I think.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the uniqueness that was so great about the metal scene thrived in the mid to late nineties and early 2000, but then it started to fade away and give way to copycats. It makes me sad.

I'd like it more if it wasn't the same riff for 5 minutes at a time. Seriously, it had such potential to me.

about Monotheist:

I really didn't like it at first. Heck, I couldn't even listen to all of it. But I gave it another shot, then another one and in the end I think it's a very good album. It really grew on me. It's all slow and stuff, but overrall the mood of the album is constant and all songs fit in there.

+ 100

I still think Monotheist was a top 10 album of 06, for me anyway. I thought the songs sounded pretty different, I don't really hear so much similarity between the different songs, but either way, it was all about the mood and atmosphere. Some of it sounded almost inhuman. Songs like Obscured pretty much set a standard for atmospheric, ambient and doom for me.

I'm still curious about the new Dimmu. People here are bashing it, but other places, I see it getting praised (even from people who despise the band)

a lot of people here are elitists and biased against certain bands, so their opinions might be slightly different than most people's. The only opinion that matters is yours, so if you like it buy it. i will give the album a try when i get home, if i find it shit, the fact that dimmu borgir released it won't change it, if it is good, the album is still good no matter that dimmu borgir released it

Yeah, I know. It's just making me all the more anxious to hear it.
At the very least, I'll probably enjoy some of it, like with Puritanical (didn't like that album too much except for a couple of the songs).

LAWL @ The idea of people here being elitist.

actually, people here are more open minded than other boards.

yea, thats the internet.

Seems like everyone came around to liking Monotheist and Reinkaos but me.
Nah, Reinkaos is boring.
I liked it better than most people, but it's still nothing higher than a 3.5 out of 10. I respect all the emotion Nodtveidt put into it, but it was so generic and dirivitive of generic and dirivitive melo-death bands.

You would think all that time in prison would have made the music more powerful and inspired, but I guess that's not the case.

I don't care that it's not Storm Of The Lights Bane. I thought Celtic Frost's first three albums completely wipe the floor with Dissection's material, yet I still found Monotheist to be a brilliant album.
