Not to stir it up more then, but you said you were done, and you keep coming back, so.... is this guy getting under your skin or something?
:loco:

Nah, he's probably like me. Reading and posting in every thread out of reflex :p

Yes, but not likely. It can happen if the individuals in the band are strong as fuck, but the human mind is pathetically weak when it's faced with the almighty $$$.

I don't disagree with that.

No doubt, but I don't see any problem with sacrificing blood/sweat/tears/money for art either. It's worth it in the end.

But it doesn't have to be like that in all cases. A false dichotomy. No doubt, there must be some sacrifice for good art. But my position is why is it inherently wrong for an artist to like getting paid for their art? Even if it is a hobby (as opposed to it being a job, which you mention)?

Not really. It's an extreme opinion in a world governed by money and nothing but money, sure, but I think if you dig deeper you'll find it less than "absurd" actually

I totally agree with the money being the governing factor of the world and how disgusting it is, but why must there be only two options? Either you're a total artistic martyr or a cash-hungry sell-out. I don't think it's quite that simple Erik.

I guess the problem that I really have with your argument is that there is an implicit statement that a) no art can be popular and b) that no art can make money because if that weren’t the case then you wouldn’t refer to this depiction of rockstars being tempted by some hotshot record mogul to sell there souls for some quick cash. Look, I love bands like Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, etc. and they’re probably making upwards of 6 figures. And in context of what they do and the music they make, they’re not sellouts. They SELL their art for money. Not all art is confined to the underground (which is the vibe you put off). Maybe I’m mistaken in which case I apologize, but that’s what I get from your posts on this subject.

Oh, and someone slit my fucking throat; I’m listening to Opeth.

I think it's important to remember that its easy to be grym and tr00 when you're 25 or even 30, but unless you're a hermit you've maybe got a woman and a baby or two and life creeps up on you, man. and reality can be a bitch. I like to believe that I am somewhat idealistic but when that fucking phone bill comes in, you've gotta pay it, or you can't order out for pizza :loco:

sometimes, "intelligence" is easy to detect.

I'm not trying to weigh in on either side of this but rather, to take an even handed approach.

I've retained some idealistic qualities over the years; I won't take a job just because it pays more money, for instance. And I've gotten far more socially conscious in the last five years watching President Chimpy in office. But I also know that most people acquire more responsibilities as they grow older, i.e., marriage, bills, kids, etc...

three sheets are playing our first show in like 2 weeks where maybe 20 people will be there and we'll likely get paid $300.

does that mean we're about to sell out? because if so i'm off to the bentley dealership. :loco:

hahaha i like the singular chocolate muffin.

for shows that offer to pay we're going to try to convince them for a free bar tab instead. reason being we can drink a shitload more than $300 in a single night. :Spin:
