dimmus virtual orchestra on "In Sorte Diaboli"

Film score fans are divided on Hans Zimmer, similar to "trigger vs. natural drums" and "Blue State vs. Red State". Some say he is shite and others say he is great. DSS3, you are right -- he makes a shitload of money so he must be doing something right. Even though I hate sampled orchestra, I take the latter. "Crimson Tide" theme -- cheesey as it is -- gives me chills every time!

Either way, they agree he has a fantastic collection of samples that are his own.

Dude, fucking Gladiator! Enough said!

Well... Rage's album XIII was recorded with a real orchestra, and I believe that on the album right after (Ghost I think) they used samples from the same orchestra (samples they did themselves). The result was somehow quite wrong.

I would assume Zimmer has enough ressources and connections to get a decent "custom personal library" but I wouldn't think the same of Dimmu...

There's no such things as orchestral custom samples...
Dimmu used the Vienna Symphonic Library.

ofcourse there is. The abyss choir is a custom choir libary created by Peter Tägtgren for use in the abyss studio.

He also uses this for his work on the hypocrisy albums !
Im not wrong here ive actually talked to peter about this a few years back after a gig in glasgow.

on a Dimmu note and just to back myself up here
on the credits of dimmu borgir stormblast (the new one) theres a mention and credit to the abyss choir !
All the choirs on this recording are from Peters personal collection.

Interesting. Can someone hack Hans Zimmer's hard drives and put it on the FTP please? ;)
As for the Abyss Choir, this is definitely not what I'd call and orchestra sample, just some "aaaaaaahs" and stuff :)
@ DSS3, the new Nightwish is the London Symphony Orchestra, and as must as Dimmu is selling right now, I don't think they'll ever be able to afford this. :)

I got the album on iTunes, so I can't check :(. Wikipedia cites London Philharmonic Orchestra for both Dark Passion Play and Death Cult Armageddon - does anybody have physical copies of either album to check?

hi, anyone of you knows which programm they used to make those orchestra parts on "In Sorte Diaboli".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTCLt9_xymQ

theres this video where he says that he programmed all the stuff, so it has to be some vitrual instrumen/smapler/synthy thing.

thx

They used Gigastudio.

The Choir parts was another program I can't remember the name of...but it was a vst + a midi-plugin for the words.
I can ask Mustis next time I meet him.

LSO?? Damn...

The article about Hans Zimmer was in Sound on Sound back in July or so as far as i remember, it's true, he had an entire sample library he had made up that he uses for writing and iirc he had used them on the first Pirates of the Caribbean, the whole point of the article was about how he was trying to make an entirely new sample library to work on the newer Potc films, and how he needed all these servers full of samples and stuff, was a really interesting read. If I can dig out the magazine I'll double check it for you!

EDIT: Here we go, http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul07/articles/pirates.htm

Ha, fuck yeah. Great post.

Zimmer is undoubtly my favorite film score writer to date, while there are plenty others that do tickle my fancy.

But the Rock OST and POTC 2 are :notworthy

I wouldn't doubt they've used gigastudio with other giga libraries as it's an extremely deep program.
