Discussion for anyone who enjoys playing an instrument, at any level.

anyone here play any exotic instruments, such as any oriental, Middle Eastern/Mediterranean or African?

wanted to take up the Erhu -the Chinese two stringed violin- but snapped one of the strings (haven't really bothered to look for replacements).
so wanted to know if anyone else has given anything else a go and what are your experiences with them?

When im alone i play with my organ.....

wait...sorry, i thought that said erotic, not exotic

seriously i can play the opening riff to sign of the cross, smoke on the water and better man, thats about it

I played anglungs when I was in primary school, but that's not exactly hard! Exotic enough though.

I can play a couple of basic KISS excerpts on guitar, and a few slower Slayer bits, but that's it. I haven't picked up the guitar in ages anyway. The strings are rusted to buggery, one is missing, and none of it is plugged in. Not to mention it's not the easier guitar to play seeing as the neck is bent. Major case of can't be fucked.

I want to learn hurdy-gurdy.

Ocarina is about as exotic as I go with any competency. I have a few weird instruments (mostly obscure Chinese ones with obscure names) that I can't play for shit and basically sit in my back room gathering dust.

were you inspired to the ocarina, like so many others, by the Legend of Zelda game that contains the titular instrument?

and if you don't want the Chinese instruments, let us know and what they are and I may try to take them off your hands if you want. :)

Got it on one :p The Song of Time and Epona's Song were the first two things I learnt to play on it and everything else went from there. The Gerudo Valley theme was one of the first flamenco-esque things I learnt on guitar as well.

Ahhhhh... I feel like dusting off the N64 and firing Ocarina of Time up now :p

As for 'unwanted' instruments:  ;)

Where the hell did you find an Ocarina? I've been looking for a reasonably priced non-cheap plastic toy one for ages.
I bought my first one while I was at Kyoto - a nice ceramic ocarina similar to the one in Ocarina of Time. I picked up an awesome sounding solid koa one from a stall in Haymarket for $80 :D Easily my favourite one. That was only a year or so ago so they may well still be there. The other decent non-rubbish one is a ceramic Ocarina of Time copy ordered on eBay.co.jp. eBay.com.au doesn't offer much even when searching for 'Worldwide' items but the Jap site has quite a few quality ones most of the time.

I'm still looking for a decent glass one and apparently you can also get multi-chambered ones which sound interesting for the obvious polyphonic benefits... if anyone stumbles upon someone selling those at a reasonable price, sign me up!

Heh! knew it.

Ocarina of Time
kicked arse and there is rumours that Nintendo are making an updated version of it (kind of hope that they do, kind of hope they don't).

actually have friends who also picked up some Ocarinas in Japan (where they are still a common instrument, akin to a recorder for children in some places I've been told) and learn The Song of Stormsand Epona's Song.
Zelda games do have some awesome music -especially the Gerudo themes and Dragon Roost Island from Wind Waker.:headbang:
