DIY 5150 Mods

well, I wanna mod my 5150 head.....I looked at FJA and Voodoo....but it is like $400 plus $100 for noise gate circuit. Not including the $100+ for shipping.

Just wondering if anyone makes a DIY kit or info to DIY?

I'm pretty good with soldering......

And who makes these damn noise gate circuits ? I can't find any info on that.

It'd be easier, IMO, just to buy an NS-2, and if you really want it inside there, wire it to the input jack and put the threshold knob on the outside of the chassis.

good idea.....but, how can I splice power to it ?

the ns2 uses 9 volts.....wouldn't that be different current than what the 5150 head would supply?

just about 101 volts less than the head us that is.

damn...so I would need a transformer for the curcuit too.....

maybe it worth the 600+ to get it done at FJA.......but damn that's big money.

Honestly, after having mine modded by him with the Bias and Clarity mods... with an NS-2 infront to eliminate the feedback and hiss from my OD808, it's really quiet, actually.

That said, I'm still going to use the Noisegate in my G-Major when it arrives tomorrow, just to make it DEAD silent.

So, how much did you spend total ? Shipping and all for those mods ?

Is it truely worth it ? Big difference ?

Did you only get the bias and clarity mod done ?

Did you lose gain or chunk when the hiss was eliminated ?

Actually, I bought mine pre-modded. I find it plenty chunky and toneful, with more than enough gain.

I nagged mine from Guitar Center for 600 used; they didn't know it was modded.

hmmm..... yeah, well it's alot of money to throw at it.

But, who knows, it might be the best thing since squeeze butter.

it just that at 600+ dollars......it makes me think it is worth a try to DIY. But, I guess if there is no info or kits to do that. Then I'm looking at a monopoly.......gotta go with FJA or Voodoo then.
