Its not better soundqualitywise, but you can controll how much L-R and Center you have, and can take out as much of the center as you feel that its possible without screwing the song up completely.

But of course it still sounds pretty damn bad.
 
I`ve done some for money (Karaoke versions for schools, weddings and shit). It depends on the song and how it was recorded, but the best way is to invert one channel and then repair the parts that are now fucked (cut&paste parts, loads of eqing and shit, experimenting with channels...). If you listen to it with producer ears it will still sound not that good but in most cases the client will be satisfied.

Somebody said it is like trying to get flours out of a already baked cake.
