...which advertises places where travelers can sleep in big cities on peoples' couches or something? I can't find any relatively cheap hostels for Amsterdam online.

Find one when you're there. Half the cities in Europe have cheaper hostels available in person than booking ahead.

Exactly. I spent a few months in Greece a few years ago and I found that travelling around all the cheap places they barely had telephones. Hell the same goes for almost any country I've whored myself about in.

For like £6 a night, I can live without Air-con and shower outside with a bucket.

You can book in advance: and if they are fully booked they'll give you a
list of close by hostels:

I ended up staying at Meeting Point like last time. It's a cool place because they have a bar downstairs where you can smoke!

I'm actually very surprised at how nice all these hostels look. I would even consider staying in one as opposed to in a hotel if I travel.
