Hey guys, I was researching for a trick old mixing guys used to do on vocals (Queen, ACDC), then I saw that Sneap uses this machine too (he mentioned in the KSE thread).

It is supposed to be an noise reduction system for 15 ips tape systems.
Analysing some sounds I found on the internet it does a lot more. It has a nonlinear eq thing, along with a nonlinear light compressor, expander and a strange gate.

I guess Sneap used this unit in more vocals than we think... Hmmm that 3k range on Accept... It sounds blended with the source vocals.

So I bought it. It might be in my studio in 10 days (US -> Brasil)
If anyone ever worked with this, please give me some tips!
Cheers!

If I remember correctly, wasn't this Dolby trick done to the guitars in Machine Head's Burn My Eyes by Colin?

nice article here on them and their effect. originally made to reduce tape hiss (you'd boost the high end before hitting the tape and then undo the effect afterwards), a lot of guys just use it to boost the top end as an effect.

Really nice article!!! Awesome! Non linear high boosts!
BTW, mine has cat 22 card.

"So, for example, when applied to a vocal track, the encoding only slightly enhances high frequencies in passages with louder vocals (strident choruses, for example) but adds much more high-frequency enhancement in passages with quieter vocals."

SOS article was super cool. Im excited to try this.

Sadly it doesn't sound the same (at least for me).

I use the dolby all the time.
If anyone want to hear what this unit does, upload some vocals (clean or screams) and i'll pass the signal through my dolby.
It really adds a unique shine.

You must be careful with dynamics so a little compress previous doesn't hurt.

It works great for screams too. Check this mix i've done

youre going to miss the world cup! o_O

Thank god! My country is totally messed up and not ready for it. Good luck for those who will be here :erk:

My advice: Be really careful here. Our criminal rates are extremely high. In january we had 2 murders a day in my city (Brasilia, Capital of Brasil).
Crimes that already happened to me: Theft, robbery, kidnap, larceny. Being kidnapped was the wrost of all.
Almost everyone I know (acctually about 70%) has suffered something here.

Just don't walk alone at night, don't take public transportation at night, etc.
I don't know if they are taking the homeless away, but the center of the city is full of crack/meth heads.

Also, people are very angry about this world cup, since it was made with public investments... There will be protests everywhere... And people are very angry about the government.

Be careful with taxists, especially in Rio, they tend to take longer paths.

EDIT: In Brasil there is a strange costume: Not giving the right change. THe government even took the 1 cent coin out of circulation

Off-topic, but unfortunately ArthurD is right... I wish I could "miss" the world cup like him, even though I live in a much smaller city than him.
