A friend of mine loves this show dearly.... But would I understand if I missed the first season. Is there even a second season on it's way out?

Theres a miniseries, 3 seasons, a spin off movie based on a couple episodes from season 2 (the original post in this thread is about that), and a fourth season on its way.
