don't see American Gangster

Yea, for once Roger Ebert is right. What happened is your projectionist at the theatre did not use the correct apature plate for the correct aspect ratio of the film. The film was probably in a flat format and the projectionist probably used a scope apature plate. I would go complain and try and get my money back. That is the only reason you would have seen anything like that. I run a movie theatre and do most of the projection work myself, so I know how this works. Ive actually sat people down after we have closed and watched films with the wrong plate in just for laughs. If you watch Michael with John Travolta with a scope plate (as it is a flat film), you will see that in the scene when they are going down the road, the car is VERY fake, the windows of the car are fake, and it was just a really inventive, cheap way to shoot the scene. If you watch it with the proper plate, you cannot tell that because the film/frame is cut at the right ratio on the screen, cutting out all of the mics, backdrops, etc... Go back to the theatre and ask to speak to the manager/owner. If they don't buy your story and realize that the projectionist is an idiot and give you a refund, then they have not been in the business very long or are complete fucking morons.

Good movie. Some nuanced direction from Scott and Washington has made a career out of being nails. I expected more, but it's awesome nonetheless.
