Uplifting, heavy, technical, all-out amazing progressive/metal album, right?

Rush meets U2 meets Metallica meets Faith No More.

Don't have a favorite track yet.

Tell me what you think...

When this came out it turned prog-rock on its head. I still think its the most complete thing they have released although Awake had classics as well. Later Dream Theater is a labour of love. Technical passage after technical passage with the poetic and verbose meanderings of Portnoy's lyrics make them seem like listening to a novel set to music so complicated that is very easy to lose interest.
Images and words has a song feel about it.
A classic in every sense of the word.

I liked this album for the most part as well as Awake but could never stand where they go off in the middle of a song for as long as they do. I thought it tore away from the song itself. I haven't bought anything by them since. I guess I really don't have too much of an ear for prog but I love Evergrey. Go figure...

"Easily their best album" seems like a cliche, but this is Dream Theater and most of their product is a profound cliche, yet with Images and Words the prog-rock cliche was at its highest peak.
I totally agree that it is most and absolutely still the best collection of "songs" that they have released.
Nothing they have crafted with all its ridiculous musicianship has surpassed this release.
Then again they are still a bit patchy. The last track is a little bit stinky.

Well Awake has some great tracks as well. And the production especially the bass is great.
Hey I have not listened to Dream Theater for a while apart from some aspects of Six Scenes which also has its tunes on the first CD anyway.
Dream Theater are just not a put on and listen in the background sort of band (not that most metal is) so a real analysis of their material requires a lot of listener effort.
But Pull Me Under is surely a prog rock masterpiece as is the first track off Awake.

Does anybody else find Learning to Live a little boring?

Another dAy is great, though. A little hair-metallish, but that sweet sax makes up for it.

"Images and Words" changed the music world as we know it. That release was one of the most influential CDs ever written. After that release, prog-metal expanded ten fold and bands in that vein of style started popping up everywhere.

I think the CD is very good and is the best cover to cover DT has released. One of the best things about it is despite it's age, it still sounds good. It aged very well with it's oustanding production and well-written and performed songs.
