dream theater sucks!?

The Great Debate.

Is this the weekly "flame Dream Theater" thread? Hey, wait a minute. Haven't we already... several times? There are only so many stabs one can take.

dimensionidol-
okay i'm new here so i hope don't begin a war.. OH. Got it.

Carry on!

The great debate is very TOOL, but I dont consider new DT, the real DT to me...one guy over at Mikeportnoy.com said it best. ill prarphrase..'Dream theater always has this inspiration corner for every album they do, i think its about time they start putting some Dream theater albums in inspiration corner i.e I&W and Awake' harsh but so true.

1)i don't think so...MESHUGGAH made really complex music and elaborate harmonies.
2)and for me in contradiction collapse they have their style perfectly developed (recording 90-91).
then they simply evolved it.

MUSIC IS NOT BASED ONLY ON MELODY.:)

I really don't think he was saying anything about music being based only on melodies or not. He was simply stating that the Petrucci's riffs and guitarwork on Images & Words have little or nothing in common with Thordendal's. Certainly not enough to qualify as an influence, let alone a rip-off.

And yes, Meshuggah make really complex music with elaborate harmonies...but surely they're not the first. And again, I don't think anyone was saying they didn't. I just really can't hear any Meshuggah influence in DT at all. Why couldn't they rip-off Rush instead? Rush has complex music with elaborate harmonies. Plus, they actually sound like DT.

You seem like a nice guy though, I admit that when you first posted I thought you were just going to go around trolling or being an elitist.

absolutely!;)

DT is much more compared to RUSH .

expecially PORTNOY tend to sound like NEIL PEART.

this is another problem 'cause Peart is one of the finest drummer ever and is really hard for PORTNOY to be compared to him!

but this is probably the matter!

DT is comparable to too much groups!

maybe a little lack of originality!?

Yes, yes well, you can compare many bands to many bands. I could compare Rush to any number of 70's prog rock bands of who they are derivative.

I will concede this point to you: Meshuggah can not be fairly compared with any other band. They are very original and alone in their particular genre.

So why are you comparing them to Dream Theater?

yes but for RUSH only first period(from first to 2112)is highly derivative then they seriously developed an originality .

HOLD YOUR FIRE or MOVING PICTURES are hard to compare to something!

then for DT seems quite the opposite .

WHEN DREAM AND DAY UNITE is quite original then from IAW to nowadays they (my opinion:p ) are quite similar to their original influences like RUSH,YES(mind HEART OF DARKNESS prototype of instrumental DT songs)MESHUGGAH,WATCTOWER etc.

i don't know...

 I always thought WDDU was much more derivative than their later stuff. But yeah, I guess it's all opinion. I can certainly here Yes & Rush in a lot of their stuff. You like Jon Anderson's vocals but not LaBrie's?

Oh well. You don't like bands if they're too derivative, I don't mind. We'll just have to leave it at that.

I sort of agree with the original thread starter. I for one, can simply not listen to many dream theater songs, yes I love some, like the song Home comes to memory, but as a whole I really dont find their albums to contain many songs, but rather crazy prog passages that sound like noise to me. Sure they are very good musicians, but i dunno, i think they still have way too many needless prog passages. I think the original thread starter is probably mad at DT, because their fans seem so arrogant about Dt, as if they are the only good band playing music right now.

yeah!

it is exactly what i mean from the start but i have been not able to tell!

for example i really enjoy john myung he is one of my favorite bass players but i don't like so much is passages in DT(except in the first album) but i like his work in GORDIAN KNOT first album!:)

sometimes it seems that the DT music is too much technical but not really arranged something quite random:rolleyes:

and i have sure problems with fan .

the press and the audience give DT an incredible amount of ego
and status !

it seems strange 'cause they wrote in WDADU a song against status seeking called infact STATUS SEEKER but then fall in the same problem!

anyway...:)

Mostly Dream Theater is clearly not for me. I'd say I somewhat even hate them. Still there a few darn good songs, such as Space Dye Vest, Metropolis Pt. 1 and Change of Seasons.

what makes it seem as if they feel they're the only good music around?

have you been on the Portnoy forum?

where Portnoy has praised Pain of Salvation, the Tenacious D, Tool and more?

give us something more than statements.. back them up for crying out loud...

christ...

eek.. may have misread...

prolly counts for some people around here tho' :p

but no.. fans have much more music they like aside from DT, in many different genres..

would you people be protective and full of praise for your favourite band?

cause for many, DT is just that

absolutely!

there is also this problem of statements as for PETRUCCI and MESHUGGAH that it is mentioned before!

...i think that for DT is better to do statements only
infact if they incorporate that influences in their sound at all ...
they don't sell no more copies like this!

remember one thing is listen to something other is play it!

mah!?

Ungh, I tried listening to pain of salvation once.. it wasn't an experience that I am glad to have had. I don't get the whiney prog thing, for me, if I want feminine emotional music, I'll listen to something truly feminine.

At this point, to me, "prog metal" stuff like dream theatre reminds of Def Leopard, cheesy, whiney, with absolutely NO BALLS.

hehe, donkey dick,

Satori

And how the hell could you find a likeness between Meshuggah and Dream Theater, besides the fact they are both male bands playing an extent of metal??
