Ok fags, if you don't like the band then don't bother posting, I'm sure your thoughts are well documented on this fucking forum somewhere. (Cue demands for search option to return)

Anyhow, this one is for those of us who do enjoy the band or have at one point or another.

I'm listening to Metropolis pt. 1 right now, remembering how much this song kicks my ass! Mike Portnoy is a damn beast!! The instrumental section of this is just sick.

So, which era is you favorite, the Kevin Moore era, the Derek Sherinian era, or the Jordan Rudess era? Each keyboardist's approach has altered the DT sound and I'm curious as to how those who do listen to the band rate the different musicians.

3rd metal band I heard after Sabbath and Metallica, and Scenes was the 1st cd I had... so yea, definitely!

Even I'll go with Scenes....the first track is probably about as emotional as Petrucci ever got.

Also, it's a great little concept / murdery mystery album. I'd love to hear it with a proper singer though.

Both of them have some very memorable songs. I don't like the more masturbatory years ...

Which brings to another interesting angle... what was your first DT cd you heard and how did you followup afterward?

I first heard them on the first album. I got the tape as a member of Columbia House. Dominici was very Geddy Lee influenced, but I loved the songs and the structures and lyrics/concepts.

I was very, very, very absorbed in Fates Warning's Perfect Symmetry album around this time, which Moore made an appearance on. Kinda ironic how Fates got them attention and then DT surpassed them in popularity very early in their (DT's) career.

As far as which keyboardist I prefer, I don't know. Kevin Moore is great at layering things and creating lush textures and soundscapes, ala Pink floyd or his very own Chroma Key project. I like OSI a lot too, they need to do another album!

Derek Sherinian is a flashy showman, hence the balls out solo albums with Dimeola, Malmsteen, Wylde and the like.

Jordan Rudess is just a bad ass mofo.

I won't be negative here.

I've only heard I&W and Scenes, but I preferred Scenes. I remember enjoying an nstrumental and some ballad-esque song.

Jordan Rudess is amazing and knows, for the most part, not to take over the entire song. Probably the best KB I've ever heard.

I bought the First Cd when it first came out also and it was Ok but did not blow me away. Was really into Death Metal at the time ...

But then Images and Words just was amazing. I don't know what problem you guys have with LaBrie .... but he really is great on that release. They wrote some amazingly catchy tunes on IAW, some of which if marketed properly could have easily turned up on AOR radio.

Then they just went off on a tnagent for me ... almost writing "show off" music ... and really only returned to proper songwriting with the latest one ...

My only problem with Labrie is the "breathy" thing he does with his voice sometimes.

I saw them on the Images & Words tour, at a club called Cardis. J. and Evil C know what I'm talking about.

WHat a place to witness that band.

My favourite Dream Theater is definetally "A Change Of Seasons". Best thing they ever did .- I still remember when they opened their concert here in 1998 with that song, on that open amphitheatre up on a hill, it was sunset, and they were playing "The Crimson Sunrise" hah. I'll never forget that one.
As an album - my fav is definetally "Images And Words". And of course the KEVMO era is better. Real progression was only done there. But then again Dream Theater were always as regressive as they were progressive.
Oh and i hate it when people ignore their debut, its a masterpiece of melodic power metal, in the u.s. tradition

Awake . And remember Dream Theater died with Kevin Moore (if it is his name) . Awake was their last good album (Scenes from a memory was composed more or less at that time , at least the very basics).Dream Theater died in 1994/5 and still people fellate them ten years later.

Images and Words is basically a masterpeice. Songs like under a glass moon, Pull me Under, and Metropolis are just so well crafted. To bad they've become pretty boring now.

I consider both Image and Words and Scenes about as good as this kind of prog can get. I voted for Scenes simply because it is so brilliantly put together. I have ever DT disc except the first one.
