Dream Theater

Octavarium is not really a bad album. I Walk Beside You and The Answer Lies Within aren't very good, but the rest of the album is great, and the title track is beyond great.

I showed I Walk Beside You to two different pop rock fans, and got a very positive response from both of them. Because I'm an annoying fanboy I will interpret this as waterproof evidence that Dream Theater are awesome no matter what they do.

Octavarium isn't their worst, and I think it's worth the price of admission for Root of All Evil and the title track (even if it's a bit overlong), which are great, and the other solid numbers (These Walls, Sacrificed Sons, Never Enough). In general they wear their influences very openly on that album- hence Never Enough sounding a hell of a lot like Muse, and the two songs mentioned above sounding a lot like an attempt to ape U2.

In my opinion, Panic Attack is by far the worst song on that album, and one of DT's worst songs period.

Meaning your opinion should be of no assistance to the OP... If he's still around. I personally think Panic Attack is pretty great though.

That's why I pointed that out, to qualify my opinion.

As for Ozz's tastes, there's nothing wrong with Nas, and KSE are fine for a pop-ish metalcore outfit. DT is significantly better than both, though, despite their weak song writing skills.

I have a love/hate relationship towards Octavarium. I was right in the middle of a big Dream Theater "thing" and they had released Train of THought which I consider a personal favorite (I know a controversial opinion in and of itself).

I was looking forward to Octavarium alot but was so disapointed when I started listening. It felt boring and uninspired. And on top of that the influences were so crystal clear that it almost felt like they copied the originals.

And then the title track hit and I LOVE it. One of the best songs I have ever heard. I think its fantastic actually. Being a long track it does make up for the rest of the album that is pretty boring overall.

I never really listen to any tracks but the title track which is rare. I usually prefer to listen to albums all the way through. So I'd say check out the title track, its awesome. The rest is pretty "meh" to me.
