I'm trying to get better at writing for drums. Who should I listen to for *interesting* fills in the more extreme genres? The only ones I can think of are Roddy, Killreich, and Goulan.

Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) and the latest Epica drummer have some very cool fills - although maybe not 'extreme' enough. I love it when drummers do some subtle stuff, the whole quads thing and fast singles gets old fast.

Listen to Dave Lombardo, early Lars Ulrich, Sean Reinert, Gene Hoglan, Sean Kinney, Richard Christy, there's a lot of things to learn by
You can check drummerworld website for videos, it's very instructive and useful, hope that will help.

+1 ^

and maybe I should add George Kollias (Nile) and Flo Mournier (Cryptopsy) since these guys have quite a few videos of them posted on places such as youtube.

I'd say, don't listen to extreme death metal drummers if you want interesting fills. The only ones who actually do nice/cool/interesting fills are Flo, Gene Hoglan and.... maybe Pat from "Martyr". I'm not sure about Hoglan but the other two play a fuckload of variety of music, which is probably why their fills are a bit more alive than those typical machine gun fills most death bands use.

My tip would be to listen to something completely different... the best would probably be jazz. I hated Jazz as a teenager because I was "br0000tal and soooo metaaaaaallll!!!", but when I realized metal is just an extension of jazz, I started loving jazz. And jazz drummers usually play some really cool and interesting shit. Anything from complex patterns like multi-hyper-gyro-super-ultra-polyrhythmic stuff to wickedly insane, blazing fills.

CHECK OUT MARIO DUPLANTIER! One of the most creative drummers imo.

I was contemplating if I should mention him too, but I'm not sure if his fills are so great that they are worth mentioning. I love his playing, he's one of my "drum heroes", but that's probably due to a combination of all he does. I'm not sure if his fills are awesome but... hey wait a minute, this is starting to sound like a personal preference post. Fuck that!

OP - go check out some Gojira too :D How would I know if you would benefit from his drumming or not? Only you could decide...

(Most people would edit their post instead of radically making a turn in their post like I did. I think this is more fun! BAUUUUOW!)

Well my idea on drumming is that it should alway fit the music, and the the fills i like most are those well aranged around what the guitars are doing, not just the drummer going crazy and out of place.

Uhh... i like the drums in this song: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIvxqZgpB-k"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIvxqZgpB-k[/ame]

They are almost mimicing the guitar

Hang on, why has nobody Said Brann Dailor from Mastodon?

I heard or read somewhere that someone asked him why he does so many fills all the time (in Mastodon) and he said it was because he used to play in a tech death band where he'd fill along with the Rhythm of the guitars.

Oh shit, crap crap crap crap crap... how could I forget Brann Dailor? o_O

Yes, that guy is some sort of a god of fill-ins. Seriously.

Listen to a not so well known drummer outside of gospel circles but actually phenomenal metal drummer named Dave Elitch. He played in daughters of mara, my old band sinphony (more straightforward), and the devils gift record i engineered last year.

Really sick out of left field drumming for metal.

And also Dirk VerBueren of soilwork. Hes absolutely one of the best in metal period.

I dont really understand why everyone is so gaga over bran dailor, nice guy, good band, but nothing more than typical single stroke rolls on the snare and around the toms in a different order now and then.

I dont know any really educated and accomplished drummers that think much of anything of the guy honestly. Its just mostly guitarists and huge fans of mastodon that think he is the shit. He's great for the band but other than that i just dont get it...

After watching Drik's video:

I can agree that he's tight and fast. But as you said for metal he's good. It could be that I cannot for the life of me listen to Soilworks music
that I find Brann more musical and pleasurable to listen.
Metal drumming becomes very Binary with 1's and 0's (ala Divine Heresy) especially with the lack of dynamics.

I won't even bother getting into the debate that Brann Doesn't use triggers ;P

It takes something extra to be able to pull off fill after fill with enough power like he does, and with good tightness.

Aside from that, I don't know many drummers who record an entire album in one day. (I'm sure someone will give me a long list of names now, but Mastodon's drummer is STILL good, no matter how many others have done that :p)

DIRK IS THE FUCKING MAN, HOLY SHIT - Stabbing the Drama has some of the most awesome drumming I've ever heard on a melodeath album (and it doesn't hurt that the mix is so painfully good as well :D)
