Drum n Bass

how do you know how i'm taking the post? Are you a detective? Bottom line is you've said something about a borderline DnB act and people called you on it and you got upset and had to try and find a way to defend yourself. I don't call Opeth a kickass deathmetal band, and you'd be sure people into death metal would correct me if i did. If you want to be right, fine. You're right. I don't care about you enough to try and explain anymore. If not caring and giving up makes it personal, then yes. This is VERY personal.

I don't care one way or the other because that's not why i'm here. If you're not interested in music discussion, why are you reading this forum? If you were, you'd respond to my post accordingly with rational, logical reasoning. If you see a flaw in my post, then point it out and i'd accept it. Instead you choose to kick up dust like a spoilt 8 year old child who is refused his favorite toy.

FFS guys, stop derailing the thread and fight in PM.

Btw - does anyone have a Danny C track called "Take Me Back"? I've been after it for ages.

I gave you a reason. You chose to ignore it. Read the analogy. again.
also:
i post here mostly out of boredom. It's not really for any sort of "stimulating musical discussion"

i've been listening to venetian snares and squarepusher for the last 4-5 years and i can easily say they are not drum n bass. they might be influenced by the genre, they might be employing bits and elements from the genre in their music but SQUAREPUSHER AND VENETIAN SNARES ARE NOT DRUM N BASS.

hibernal dream you already fucked up when you said "they have drums and bass" so why go on? this is obviously not your topic of main interest.

Wikipedia

Squarepusher, the performing pseudonym of Tom Jenkinson, is an English electronic music artist signed to Warp Records. He specialises in the electronic music genres of drum and bass, ....(inter alia)

Go Plastic has all the elements of D&B except the boringness

Drill and bass, a sub-genre of intelligent dance music (also known as "IDM"), popularized by Aphex Twin, features many of the same types of rhythms used in drum and bass and is generally focused on complexity in programming and instrumentation. Its main proponents include Squarepusher and Venetian Snares, amongst others. IDM itself has been heavily influenced by drum and bass.

The difference between drill n bass and drum n bass is like the difference between death metal and brutal death metal

anyone can write an entry into wikipedia, in fact anyone can also edit it. I think i might have a go in this case.

I love drums and bass. I have 2 friends who play drums and know a shitload of people who play bass. This is an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ISSUE and I suggest we RESOLVE IT IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT THOUGHT instead of ARGUING.

gee all this time i was trying to figure out whether you are really as stupid as you write ("it has drums and bass") but kept reminding myself of your smart comments on other threads...but with this post i can see you were just trying to be funny.

so...err yeah HA-HA! :erk:

It's not that - it just seems pointless trying to make a point here. What should we classify Squarepusher as? What is drum and bass? And why does it even matter when if someone disagrees they resort to personal attacks instead of logic. I swear the average age in here is 14 and I'm not really surprised this forum's the joke of UM.

This forum is kind of a joke. And there are lots of fanboys. The average age probably IS somewhere around 16 or so i'd think. However, this has nothing to do with what we're talking about. Plus, if you're going to criticize people for personal attacks, you should, uhh, maybe NOT do it yourself. Unless of course you don't MIND looking like a hypocrite.

btw: Dogs On Acid - Are Venetian Snares & Squarepusher Drum & Bass?

all I gleaned from that forum was:
b) a bunch of people agreed that they were at least partly d&b
so? Slipknot has way more in common with Death Metal than Venetian Snares has in common with DnB, but you can be DAMN sure if someone mentioned them in a "what's your favorite death metal band" thread on here, someone would have a problem with that.

c) why the fuck do you care so much if you're only here for "amusement"? is it amusing to engage in futile, utterly shit genre disputes with someone who is probably just trying to get a rise out of you anyway?

well, that's not the amusing part. The amusing part is how strong headed people are about things they don't know a whole lot about. I really don't think HD knows fuck all about DnB, and yet he stands by so strongly on something that even people who listen nearly exclusively to the style are mostly sure isn't right. That is just ludicrous. It's fun for a while to poke at these people and see what they say.

I don't care anymore. Call it whatever you want. But if you're going to start doing this, you may as well call Shpongle DnB, in which case they are my favorite DnB band.

Some peoples attempt at using 'mature' language is pretty dumb. the same words are used over and over.

So drum bass, while fun and maybe a little different on first listen, if you are to listen to a whole tape box of say dreamscape or something it gets old..Real fast.

Heres the translation for you pseudo-intellects.

So drum bass, while amusing and perhaps a slight diverse on primary snoop, if you are to take note to an entire tape box of say dreamscape or somewhat, it gets elderly.. rather prompt.

I hope you girls understood.

Good God, people, this shouldn't be so complicated

If it's NOT:

a.) easy to dance to
b.) 4/4 breakbeat such as Amen Break
c.) close to 180 BPM
d.) easily beatmatched/mixed with other tracks by a DJ with turntables

It CAN'T be Drum n Bass, period.

Anything that delves into odd time signatures and tempo shifts automatically gets tagged IDM. IDM/Breakcore/Drill n Bass/whatever may be derived from [x genre of] electronic dance music, but the later 2 are merely more narrow classifications of the first, not Drum n Bass.

I like this Bukem stuff, not so much this Black Sun Empire, this sounds marginally better than techno :erk:
Apparently the appropriate poncey genre title is 'Gabber' .. I just call it drum and bass!
While a more commercial release, its no less significant in the DnB field: Everything But The Girl's Walking Wounded album was a landmark album for raising mainstream awareness of DnB back in the 90's.

It was also one of most emotional releases in modern music of the time.

Ben Watts' beautiful loops and melodies combined with Tracey Thorn's sublime singing is an experience like no other. Every person should own this album.

PS: of note, Omni Trio, another superb DnB outfit, also did an amazing remix of the title track Walking Wounded.
I was listening to them the other day, a pretty interesting listen i'd say.

It is interesting to observe this debate from an outside and mostly disinterested perspective. What I see as much as hibernal_dream's ignorance of d'n'b is your vested interest in the genre as a long-standing fan, which seems to translate a forum full of different opinions into "people who listen to the style are mostly sure [he] isn't right." Now, I know just as little about d'n'b as I'm sure your average metal fan, but what I do know is that engaging in such stubborn genre bitchfests is an absolute waste of time, and that my friend is why you'll find me absolutely wasting my own time giving you trouble over it. Does that make sense to you? If it does, please explain it to me because I have no god damn idea why I'm still posting about this! :loco:

stubborn genre bitchfests are fun when you are in them and they provoke scientific thinking...musical generalisation, in other words and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. you get to learn new bands, styles and different views. since band classifications are necessary to describe a band to someone else, these kinds of discussions are only natural. why is it such a big deal to you?

if you look at it that way, internet forums are all a massive waste of time.

i like the intellectual thrill, though. sorry.
