Drum only track for a new Underoath song

15ips and 30ips are different tape speeds, not that i have any experience with tape but i think its 15ips is meant to sound a bit warmer than 30ips.

haha i just meant generally - theres no way i could know the difference like that considering ive never worked with tape!

Yep, you're right. Worked on 2" 24 track stuff for a while in my earlier days (many moons ago). 30ips will have a cleaner, crisper high end, but lack a little on the bottom. 15ips will be a little warmer and have slightly fuller lows. Man, I miss those days. :)

what i intended to say was... the main drums were recorded on 15ips tape... and the tom parts were most likely recorded at 30ips.

here you will see the roll-off difference between 15-30ips.

also, matt goldman uses a neotek console which can produce a significant amount of crosstalk... probably why you can hear the bass.

How the hell can you hear the difference of tape speeds between fills and hits?!

...practice.

sounds great!!!

Toms are 100% real imo.
Snare sounds super real but to consistant on the tail. So I would say sample from the real snare compressed to fuck and sent to the same bus.

Kick could be real, but I would say its the same like with the snare.

Bass bleed is funny

How do you know that it's not just EQ or mic choice causing that sound? I don't understand how you can narrow it down to just one possibility just from listening. What are you listening for? More bass and less highend?

I definately hear a sampled drumkit! But a good one.. DAMN goood! Matt told me he puts some mics into the hallway of his studio, to get some nice room sounds for his drums! I stole his idea some time ago! :D Btw he uses U87 for overheads. I think that makes a difference... I also tried U87 as overheads, but I felt ashamed to cut out everything below 500 Hz! ;D Unforunately that drumkit wasn't sounding THAT good, so the U87 thing was counterproductive! ;)

Btw, that recording isn't quantisized as usual isn't it? I hear some timing issues...

EDIT:

HAHA, I found something great on my HDD, I just NEED to share! I tried to get this "Goldman-Drumsound" about 2 years ago, and I found my drumstem from this session. And yes, I have to say I wasn't that far away! ;D Sounds like I even used the same snare sample!! :D That was the session with the U87 overheads. Unfortunately theres no roommicing in my drumstem. (But please don't blame me for that shitty kick and these trigger issues, that mix is really old)
