It's been years since i've posted on this forum.
Back then i was trying to get a decent guitar tone, and practicing mixing with programmed bass (Trilian) and programmed drums (Superior Drummer 2).
Since then, i've bought a real bass and also started playing drums, and now i'm trying to get into the drums recording thing by myself, and be able to record a full rock band (drums, bass, guitars, vocals) by myself.
My goal is first to get decent mixes for demos (for my band where i play bass, but also friend's bands, covers, and also my one-man-band solo projects), get better as a drummer (drum tuning, consistency, tone, chops, ...), get better at recording and mixing (I'd like to tech and do live sound for small bands when i will feel ready).
In a second time, i might get results that are good enough to do this (drum recording and/or mixing) for bigger productions (actual EPs and albums), but that's too far right now.
So the goal of this thread is to follow my humble beginnings in drum production, where i do everything myself (playing, recording, mixing), and use only natural drums, no samples, and don't quantize stuff like a mo'fo.
I start with humble means :
- booking time in a random rehearsal space and using the drum kit from there
- using only a zoom H6 to record the kit (the Zoom built-in XY capsule as a somewhat overhead pair, and 4 Audix spot mics (D6 for kick, i5 for snare, D2 for rack tom, D4 for floor tom), with my laptop to monitor tracking (the zoom H6 plays the role of audio interface)
- i have a mobile and low-footprint setup (all the gear i bring with me to the rehearsal studio where i track (double-kick pedal, zoom h6, audix mics, mic clamps, cable, small laptop) can be carried on a bike (one backpack on my back, and 2 bags on the bike front basket))
So basically i'm like a Youtube drummer with a modest acoustic kit and recording setup, that goes to a random rehearsal space to record drums there, using the (affordable if not cheap, and not well-tuned when i find it) in-house kit that's available on the day i book the session.
I've read the OzNimbus drums guide, and i've read/seen tons of material about drum playing, drum tuning, drum tracking and mixing subject, but as said before, i don't play in the same field as those professionals and i've just started into doing this stuff myself, and with very humble means, so that's what this thread will be about, in the beginning at least.
Of course I'd love to get feedback from you guys so that i can improve my craft.
Last but not least, ff this thread can show some that you can get decent results with very humble means, and inspire some to start drum tracking by themselves, I will ve very happy !
