Drum triggering

I got an old Yamaha drum module that I was wondering if I even really need.
Can I just record the "blips" from the triggers and use samples later, or do I have to record the sounds triggered on the drum modules and replace them later?

You just can put your triggers straight into mic preamps, you don't need a module...

DDrum pro-line seems to get recommended the most, IIRC.

Yep, we use the DDrum Pro triggers on toms, kick, and snare. Run them straight into your pre to record the blips and use SoundReplacer (ProTools), Drumagog, or APTrigga.
