So I started drumming for fun a few weeks ago.
And that's a lot of fun actually.

I took the time to grasp ergonomics principles (playing position, grip and such) but everytime I play for a prolonged period of time , I get a mild pain in my right index finger, around the first joint area. If I keep playing I end up constantly loosing the grip and throwing the stick across the room and of course the pain get worst.

I had this finger broken like twenty years ago but never had rehabilitation of any sort. So maybe this is connected though I have a hard time believing such an old injury would cause this.

Any recommendations (other than have it checked by a specialist)?

Even if you read up it will most likely take you a while to develop decent technique. Proper technique is all in the fingers, especially the middle, ring and pinky fingers. The index finger is used to support the stick but it's not where the majority of the motion should come from.

Try to focus on using your wrists and "bottom" 3 fingers. Avoid using a "death grip" on the stick, and never use your entire arm to hit the drum.

If you are still having pain it's probably because of the prior injury. Drumming can take a pretty heavy long-term toll on the body.

Thanks.
I think that's what I do but maybe there's room for improvement.
Also maybe I should strech my fingers before I go crazy on the kit.
