Well we now have ~550 to spend on a lightshow. We are going a computer route (laptop, cubase, m audio fast track ultra) so we can also switch patches via midi.

I've been PMing z3ro and he got me on the DXMIS which is probably what we will do. The software can run as a VST inside of cubase which makes it incredibly easy to map out.

Now I'm planning to buy a decent or two (but cheap) DMX dimmers (4ch) and 150/500 watt lights. I've seen a bunch of touring bands use them so I figured we would do., Now I'd imagine a strobe is key but after that we have no idea. So I figured some direction would be good., What are you guys using?

We played with a kinda emo-ish, hardcore-ish band recently who had these light boxes they made. There were really only a couple actual stage lights in them, the rest were with the aforementioned construction lights and high-watt bulbs for outside your garage. They had this rackmount piece that ran all of it, something like this: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/American-DJ-SC8-Lighting-Control-System?sku=810054
They had a dude with them who just played with the flash switches while they played.

They also had a light in their kick drum that lit up whenever the drummer played his kick. Was kinda cool, but lost it's novelty pretty quick. Would have been better if the light only came on during accented parts, like a quick burst of double bass here and there...instead of EVERY hit.
