dvd

Hmm, I see a very strong argument coming along here bro. I do understand that an Opeth DVD would be fucking fantastic, but the thought of the band going commercial really troubles my mind alot.
It's not that I wouldn't WANT them to release one, it's just I don't want loads of people buying the shit. Opeth are a very rare breed of musicians unlike any other I have heard.

I want to keep it underground, and so do many other like me among the underground community.

I like your style Collapse Generation, I like your style

How exactly is making a DVD going commercial? Death has a DVD out (although it was made to pay for Chuck's cancer...), and I don't see everyone getting into them. Especially because so many of us haven't seen them live... it would be a chance for you to get a glimpse of the actual thing. So, making a DVD is going to get everyone into the music... how? People are still going to be pussys when it comes to Opeth no matter how "popular" they get. Opeth is too good to become mainstream.

but the thought of the band going commercial really troubles my mind alot.

Your mind shouldn't be troubled by things that don't mean trouble.

We live in 2002, DVD's are here to stay. So if Opeth was to
release a VHS, would you still call that commercial? Many
bands have released VHS cassettes over the years, but
to become commercial just because of that? Nah, I don't
think so. I can truly feel your "protection mode" here, Opeth
also has a special place in my heart. I want them to be mine,
and mine only. But they are not. Many people feel the same.
And the underground part? I think metal like this is pretty
underground no matter how you look at it. And it will
probably stay that way. Will people suddenly cherish Mikael's
growling? People who listen to the usual brainwashing MTV
stuff? I think not.

I noticed your surrender in an earlier post,
I just had to ramble on for a few minutes here.

Emperor's Emperial Live Ceremony is on DVD. In fact it might be the best concert vhs/dvd ever made. Are Emperor commercial? I think a band has to be very confident in their live performance in order to release a live cd/dvd/vhs. Emperor are some of the best musicians around. Maybe Opeth/Michael are not proud of their live performances, I've seen them live and I think they should be, but who knows.
In today's technology, it would be very easy for a band to release a dvd (produce, press, and market it themselves). For whatever reason, they don't want their live abilities commited to dvd.

Taken from Terrorizer:

"A freidn of ours did a 40-minute documentary about the making of the album, which was meant too be released but never was. So this was a good way for us to get some of that material out to the people (Black Waterpark 2CD set with video)But that's kinda yesterday's news now, y'know. He'll be filming everything again for the next album, so maybe we'll release a DVD or something, but that'll be quite a long way off."

So there, there is a hope! :D

AS far as commerciality goes... here's what I found in Terrorizer:

"We're doing three more festivals this year, there's a show in Exeter with a bunch of bands I've never heard of, which fans in England have told me is a "nu-metal" festival apparently. We don't care, y'know, we don't give a fuck who we play with, it doesn't matter to us."

I'm not really happy with this!

I'd really like to see the BWP studio footage sometime, with audio. Maybe they'll throw them both on a making-of DVD if they ever do one.

Ehhh, I dunno. Good show, no doubt, but whoever shot it needs to bone up on cinematography a bit more. The Nightwish one is hella good, IMHO.

Some good points lads. I know that O would not, well I hope, ever go commercial. Sometimes the fame goes to bands' heads, like I think this happened with Fear Factory. They started off fucking really great, nice heavy vocals and riffs. But in the end, they became fairly commercial, IMO.

Just had to say that.

BTW, what is the Emperor DVD like??

I think it's inevitable that at some stage Opeth will release a DVD. Mayhem, Emperor, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth have all put out DVD's, and I don't think Opeth will be any different, especially as interest in the band continues to grow.

I honestly don't think O have the stage-prescence to make a proper DVD. When I went to see them, they didn't really do much on stage, like get hyped up or nothing like that. I think if they were to make a DVD, a load of compiled studio and live footage would be excellent. One thing I love to see is bands in the studio, I gives me a buzz.

If commercial equals catchy and relatively simple, think about Katatonia, who made an album full of hit single songs and it ended up being their best ever.

Then again, that style fit them, but I doubt it would fit Opeth.

If the DVD were all hyped up and over produced and flashy to where it put forth some kind of image that the actual band lacks, that would seem cheesey and I'd hate it. But like Dvoters said, a DVD with maybe a few live performances, studio footage, band interviews, etc.. you know, fan stuff. That would be really nice. I hope some day they do at least something.
