Eliminating room sound

Is getting toooo much room sound in a mic due to poor mic placement or shape of the room or a combination?
I was really having a hard time with this

Are you using a room mic?

What are you micing up? We are talking about guitar correct?

How far is your mic off a speaker?

If you are micing a cab normally there should be no room noise...

The only thing I've tried is putting up a blanket "wall" a foot or two behind the mic to hopefully kill some reflections and stop some room noise (because sadly, there is some) from getting in. It kind of worked okay... Also, just be sure to put the mic really close up.

1. Move your mic closer to the speaker.
2. Build a cheap isolation box/booth (carpets or pillows on its walls).

yes a guitar amp. I was putting the SM57 about 3 inches from the speaker but still sounded really hollow? I'm kind of new to this.

Try about 2 inches closer, that will help a little bit.

straight on is a good place to start, and you'll probably end up staying there. By the way, what mic are you using? I was using a crappy 30 dollar vocal mic when I started and had it touching the grill straight on but I was still getting tons of room sound. If you aren't using it already, something like a sm57 is a good idea.

I have an SM57 and an API clone.
Do you go mic->preamp->compressor->gate ?
Or would you recommend something else?

I would look other places to cure your "Hollow" sounds. Even at three inches the SPL of the inital speaker wave is going to mask any reflections.

you're not getting much if any room at 3 inches and assuming decent volume.

not sure what hollow sounds like to you but...

First off, I'd swap mics and hear the difference. if you're not used to the 57s presence peak, that could be thowing you and not all 57's are born equal

Secondly, maybe the tone right out of the speaker is hollow. forget what it sounds like in the room

Maybe ditch the comressor and gate. To much compression could make it sound hollow.

God no.

Espically if your playing with gobs heavy distortian. It going to be compressed to hell already.
