Emo Production is great!

Can I please class bullet for my emo as Emo? :p Anyway, a lot of fans of the band i know were actually disgusted at how the band sounded live after hearing how well the the album was produced. This is where bands like Maiden reign, no over the top productions on the record but live sound oh so much better than the record :)

Damn fine band.

My girlfriend likes them, and I've gotta say, they're pretty good. It's straight-up rock; why they'd be classified as "emo" by anyone I have no idea. Granted their lyrical content is rather dark, but there's really no similarity between them and the emo/core/pop-punk crowd.

Good production, too. I don't like that I can hear Auto-Tune kicking in- that's totally not my thing, especially on straightforward rock- but I suppose that's par for the course with current major-label releases.

1) Rise Against ain't "questionable"
2) Bullet For My Valentine suck so feel free to class them whatever you want Kev! ;)
3) Saw/Met Underoath + Saosin when Taste Of Chaos stopped by here last Fall. I listened to their records by that time cause I had to do interviews. Don't know why but I somehow missed that they were mixed by CLA. I'll see if I can dig them up again to check em out again. BTW: Both bands are super nice guys but I don't like the music.
4) I like Nickelback.

Emo albums with great production: Piebald's When Life Hands You Lemons, and possibly How It Feels To Be Something On by SDRE. The music you guys are talking about isn't emo, and has sterile, lifeless production. And while I don't think Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American is emo, it is the same style of music you guys are talking about, and that recording/performance is head and shoulders above most modern anglo-affluent-college pop.

some "questionable" bands whose albums i love to listen to:

Saosin
Rise Against
Breaking Benjamin
Underoath
Nickelback
3 Doors Down
30 Seconds To Mars
Alter Bridge
Dark New Day
My Chemical Romance
Shinedown
Papa Roach
Seether
Hinder
Drowning Pool
Distrubed
Demon Hunter
HIM
Mercy Fall
Soil

I used to not like Disturbed but now they are my new favorite band. I love them now. All because of that Genesis cover "Land of Confusion". It totally turned me.
I've been diggin Demon Hunter too.
All this stuff is Emo?
Most of these bands I like but wouldn't buy their cds.
A few I've never heard of.

Haha, well I had never considered 30 Seconds to Mars an emo band, but I do have to admit that their second record has pushed them further in that direction. Regardless, I like all of their stuff a lot, and I think Jared Leto's got a really powerful, really cool sounding voice.
Does anyone here listen to Stabbing Westward? I've always really liked Tom Lord-Alge's mixing on their self-titled record (their last record). He completely conquered the low end with that one...like, a perfect amount of sub-lows coming at you, so you can really feel the bass guitar but it's also not too boomy.

I love Stabbing Westward. I agree with you on the mixing on the last album as well. Maybe not their strongest musically but definitely their best production. I also agree about 30STM not being a emo band, but it figures that on a metal board that would be the concensus.

I wonder what style of mixing has to go into to making a record sound like that.

Well I guess everyone has a slightly different ideo of what is Emo or not... ;)

Btw I found the latest Underoath record yesterday and could only listen to half of it! Seriously I don't even like the sound (no matter if it's CLA) can't hear what the guitars are doing... - but that might also come from shitty riffs! ;) I have no idea why these guys sell so much records in the states...

The definition of "Emo" seems to have changed dramatically in the last few years. MCR are a far cry from Sunny Day Real Estate and The Appleseed Cast (two of my favourite bands), who used to be defined as "Emo" 10-15 years ago.

yea years back if someone asked me if i liked any emo i would say yea, applesead cast and sunny day. these days i have to say NO because noone knows who those bands are now anyways.

Appleseed are/were a brilliant band. One of the best gigs of my life was seeing them in a relatively small club in East London 3 or 4 years ago. Absolutely huuuuge sound.

Ladies, don't even start.

30 Seconds To Mars' first album is AMAZING all around. It's basically prog metal, you guys need to listen to that one.

The second album is pretty much "this is what emo would sound like if it didn't suck." I dig it.
