Emperor are one of those bands I couldn't get enough of when I first started listening to underground metal but who I don't often have the urge to listen to these days. My official opinion is that their fist two full lengths are excellent, Equilibrium is average and Prometheus is good if patchy. Although when compared to the other important norwegian BM bands (Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, Immortal and Enslaved) they don't really have the same lasting appeal.

Wow, my thread sure did go to shit. I don't know where the they aren't good comes from, it sounds awesome to me. I am not really familiar with black metal, so I haven't heard any of those other bands, but still, what a freaking awesome album. If anyone could point to a better Black Metal album, I'll be sure to check it out.

I agree with this part of your post. Personally, I think "IX Equilibrium" and "Prometheus" is actually more crappy than Peccatum.

Couldn't agree more, though saying that something as one dimetional as early Mayhem has more lasting apeal then Emperor is pretty laughable...

I don't get why everyone hates Prometheus so much. I don't own the album YET (it's on the way) but from the 2 full songs I've heard (Empty and something else) and the loads of clips it sounds great. Granted, it ain't black metal, but it is REALLY good. The stuff about it being show-off wankery is absurd. Just cause Emperor got technical hardly means they're wanking. On the other hand, the 2 songs I've heard from ITNSE are rather... boring, to put it bluntly. I'm not much for minimalistic BM though (minimilastic in this sense of few riffs in 6 minute songs).

Guardian, I'm curious, why don't you like Emperor *at all*? I've noticed they've never appeared on ANY of your bm reccomendation lists...
