What the deal with emperor?

haha, hopefully you mean riffs. That would make sense. Because 4 chords in a song would be extremely boring. 2-3 riffs could easily make a song. Not a complex song, which some people would prefer. People have different taste especially when it comes to complex and simple things in music. some people like cock and ball torture due to the fact their music is simple. some people like Iron Maiden for their more complex songs.
totally, and thats the thing. i love complex music. and there is plenty of complexity to go around in emperor. also, have it be known that im much more into DM, for the very reason of complexity. but im also a big symphonic fan, it was my first introduction to music, so i love that aspect of black metal

I like Emperor, even though only their first CD was black metal. I don't recall seeing them being touted as the best by many people, and they sure as hell aren't underground in terms of extreme metal.

ok, now this bugs me. how can you say only their first cd was black metal? this whole trve black metal crap is idiotic

I think the fact that only one person is adamantly defending Emperor prooves that they realy arent anywhere near as overhyped as the thread creator seems to think they are.

Now that I found this thread, I can defend them. :p

I can't disagree that Emperor has become popular. Their later albums are less inspired by their ideologies, and as noted above, black metal bands which have come astray from those core ideals have produced sub-standard albums.
As well as any band which never followed them but still tried to create similar sounding music.

However, Emperor's earlier stuff is Black metal and was created with intense passion as displayed in other early Black metal works. After ITNE, that changed. The music became more well known as well as accessible (both physically and more aurally pleasing to the masses). Whether you disagree with their motives for change you cannot deny their claim for being innovators in black metal.
It's a similar story for Immortal. The music became more refined as time passed, but originality became less and less with each new release. Immortal just never became as popular as Emperor so less people feel the need to criticize them.

In The Nightside Eclipse is possibly my favourite black metal album of all time (maybe tied with Enslaved's "Vikingligr Veldi" or Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"). I really can't see how "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk" ISN'T black metal either. Genres aside, they were still a brilliant band that peaked quite early in their career (ITNE), but they never released a bad album.

Well, Emperor does have a big profile on Allmusic guide, including pictures and full reviews for every album. That can tell you something.

Random tidbit: Last winter at my hightschool, Mayhem became a big thing. Someone found out about the Count and told everyone, so for a week, Mayhem was the topic of discussion at school. It was fun really, all the drugs/rap talk was put aside for awhile. I already had heard plenty of their music beforehand, so it was intresting to hear what people who didn't even know what black metal was, had to say.

heh. Seems like nobody in our state knows much music outside hiphop. The mayhem story is hilarious though. I guess we can expect either a bunch of trendwhores or actual black metallers coming around due to this cause.

Funny how it happened though. Because Varg killed Euronymous the whole school suddenly becomes interested. Death really is mass hysteria.

ok theres been alot of me bashin as of late so lets clear it up 1.no, im not a troll I just have one profile my own, serial killer. 2.I consider C.o.F black metal because they got all the elements maybe your opinian of what makes black metal differs from mine but thats it 3.if you emperor is complex because they got some asshole playing the organ you are sadly mistakeing and dont ever compare them to mayhem they rule and acually are hardcore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both are ridiculously overrated by people who haven't heard much else in terms of Black Metal.

dude, thats pretty ignorant of you. i own plenty of black metal. to say that anyone who likes either of those bands alot doesnt know much black metal is retarded. i think you need to "shut the fuck up"

Considering that's not even what he said, you're coming off like a complete moron.

he said that people who hype emperor and mayhem dont have much experience in the genre. saying that if they had heard more black metal they wouldnt like em as much. that doesnt have to be the case
~gR~

No, he said that people that have little experience in the genre tend to overrate Emperor, which is true.

nevermind the fact that plenty of people who listen to alot of black metal can rave about em too
~gR~

Where, at any point, did anyone deny that?

You seem to be overlooking the fact that overrating something is a bad thing.

Genocide Roach, you jump to conclusions too fast. Maybe you need a time out.
